I should be annoyed that he thinks I would be careless with Brady’s safety. However, I kind of like how protective he’s become over our son.
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“Anyway, I should get out of here before Brady wakes up or Fiona turns up. We wouldn’t want her seeing me and asking questions.” He smirks.
I roll my eyes at his teasing tone.
“I’ll see you at work,” he says.
“Yeah, see you…”
He smiles then walks out of my apartment.
God help me.

Idon’t embarrass easily. In fact, I don’t remember the last time I was embarrassed before two weeks ago.
Sitting there in Kayla’s kitchen in my underwear, practically confessing my love to her while she looked like a deer in headlights was mortifying.
I was so stupid to think that because we shared that night together, she’d want some sort of relationship with me.
I guess I’ve been spoiled by my experiences with women in the past. Past casual sexual partners have frequently tried to parlay what was always supposed to be one night of passion into a relationship, but I’ve never been interested in that.
Normally, I’m the one running from commitment, but this time I was the one proposing it.
I guess the night we shared wasn’t as earth-shattering for her as it was for me.
Although I haven’t been in a real relationship since Rachel, I haven’t been a monk either. However, I haven’t ever connected so entirely with any other woman than I did with Kayla that night.
The sex was good, mind-shattering even, but what tipped it over the edge for me was actually spending the night together. Holding her soft body against mine. Burying my nose in her peach-scented hair, and feeling her heartbeat sync with mine.
That night was everything. So much so that in the two weeks that have passed, I haven’t been able to think of anything else.
It has meant many an inappropriate boner in public. Luckily, I’ve been able to hide them every time long enough for me to call on images of Grandma Grant to deflate them.
Things were awkward between Kayla and me at first, but we’ve blown past all that. Now we are just simply colleagues and co-parents.
It’s all very civil.
I’m at my desk reviewing an application when I come across one from Kayla.
I pick up the intercom on my desk and call her office.
“Hey, can you come to my office?” I ask when she answers.
“Sure. I’ll be right there.”
The line goes dead and five minutes later Kayla is walking into my office.
“What’s up?” She lowers herself in a chair across from me.
“I just saw your application to Human Resources to recruit 16 reporters?”
“Yeah?” She stares at me like that’s a normal request.
