“Even if he does come here, you don’t have to worry. I’ll keep him away from you and Brady.”

“Thanks, I appreciate that.”

“It’s not a problem.”

I sit there in silence for a while. “I believe you when you say you’ll protect us from him, but realistically, he is Brady’s grandfather, and we will meet him at some point. What should I be expecting?”

“Well, like most wealthy people he has a very strong sense of entitlement. He’s always gotten whatever he’s wanted, and one thing he is consumed with is his and our family’s legacy. He forced it on me, but luckily, I wanted to go into the family business. So it wasn’t such a big problem. He’s also going toinsist that Brady be raised a certain way so as to follow in our footsteps.”

“Surely Brady is too young to be pulled into the family business.”

“That didn’t stop him from trying with me. If it wasn’t because of my mother getting in his way, my dad would’ve had me in the mail room of the company as soon as I was able to work. That’s one of the reasons my mom left. She didn’t let him do it to me, so I won’t let him do it to Brady.”

“That’s good to know.”

“Good. I’m glad you know that I have your back.”

“I do.” I stand up. “Anyway, I have to get back to work.”

“Of course, and when Arthur gets back, I’ll talk to him about Isaac.”

“Thanks.”

I leave Adam to himself and head back downstairs.

For the rest of the day, the specter that is Garret Grant hangs over me.

For years I’ve been hearing about this man. I’ve always thought that the stories were probably exaggerated, but from what Adam just told me, that probably isn’t the case.

That he would advise Adam to try and get full custody of Brady to further whatever grand notions of world domination he has is crazy.

I know Adam told me not to worry, but what kind of an idiot would I be to leave all this to chance.

What happens if in six months Garrett is able to convince Adam to go for full custody?

The second I get a moment, I lock myself in my office and call my lawyer. I need to know my options. I need to know what rights Garrett has as a grandparent.

If he ever comes after me, I need to be prepared.

There is no way I am letting anyone take my son away from me. It’ll be over my dead body.

ADAM

Iam never eating supermarket sushi again.

Two days ago, I was craving sushi, and because my schedule wouldn’t allow for me to go to a good sushi restaurant, I got a pack fromCost Low.

I never used to understand when people would sayI feel like deathwhen they were sick.

I now understand.

When I woke up yesterday, my stomach was determined to turn itself inside-out. That accompanied by a fever and headache have meant I’ve spent the past 24 hours bent over the toilet puking. It’s amazing that I still have anything to throw up, considering I haven’t eaten in over a day.

I am convulsing in bed, praying that the good Lord will just take me when my doorbell rings.

I hope that by not answering, whoever it is will get the hint and leave. However, five minutes later they haven’t stopped.
