It’s not as if Kayla was ever mine in any way.

I guess I had convinced myself that it was only a matter of time.

Now I have to get used to the idea that there’s going to be another man in Kayla’s life. There’s going to be another man in my son’s life.

Actually, I don’t have to get used to that last part at all. She and I never discussed introducing partners to Brady.

I spring from bed and head back out.

She and I are going to have this conversation right now.

Damn this traffic!

The longer I sit in my car, the angrier I get at the situation, and the more I realize that it actually wasn’t all in my head. There was something between us.

Although she didn’t come out and say it, I know she wanted me. At least up until this afternoon.

When I finally make it through traffic and get to her place, I park haphazardly in the middle of two parking spots and run up to her apartment.

I knock on the door and wait. When there isn’t an answer, I thump on it one more time.

When she pulls it open, she’s wearing a pair of jersey short shorts, a tank top so thin I can see her tight nipples through the fabric, and a mean scowl. Her hair is piled up on her head with a claw clip, and it accentuates the slope of her neck.

I shake my head to disperse the lascivious thoughts that are distracting me from accomplishing what I came here to do.

“So what? You’ll date anyone but me?”

“Excuse me?” Her neck snaps back, her brows tense, and she narrows her eyes at me.

“I saw you kissing that jackass out on the street.”

She folds her arms and kinks her hip to the side. “What business of yours is it?”

“You are a mother. That’s inappropriate.”

She wrinkles her nose. “So because I’m a mother, I can’t date?”

“You can date whoever you want, but sucking face with them in front of the building where OUR son can see is unacceptable.”

“First of all, Brady is at a sleepover. Secondly, even if he weren’t, I can kiss whoever I want, wherever I want.”

“Whatever. I want to know, have you introduced him to Brady?”

“What?”

“Have you introduce your boyfriend to Brady? Because I’m not comfortable with that.”

She looks at me as if my hair has just caught fire and shakes her head. “You’re insane. He isn’t my boyfriend and I haven’t introduced him to Brady.”

“Yeah, he isn’t your boyfriend.” I fold my arms.

“He isn’t.”

“Well, if he isn’t, he soon will be. You clearly like him. That’s why you were kissing on the street for everyone to see.”

She throws her hands up. “Oh my God! We didn’t even kiss.”

I smile. “Kayla, you don’t need to lie to me. I’m a big boy. Plus, I saw you with my own eyes.”
