He nods.
“And in the middle of a workday?”
“Yes. I didn’t plan it. I went to see Lucas, and he kind of made me.”
I roll my eyes and scoff. “What is wrong with the both of you? He made you run in the sun as some sort of punishment and you did it?”
He laughs. “No, that’s not what happened. I had had enough of the distance between us. So I went to talk to him, but he was on his way out for a run, so I joined him.”
“Okay… What happened?”
“We’ve cleared the air. He apologized, I apologized, and now we’re all good.”
“Are you being serious?” I offer a hesitant smile.
“Yeah, we are fine.”
I take in a breath and let it out in a huge woosh. “Thank goodness for that. I honestly don’t know how much longer I could have dealt with his bullshit.”
He laughs. “Anyway, to celebrate my reconciliation with Lucas, and your work on the Moorhead story, I was thinking I could take you out?”
I step up to him and put my hands on his chest. “I would love that, I really would, but we said we’re still going to try and be as discreet as possible. I know we’ve told HR, an experience I never want to go through ever again in my life, but I don’t want to risk any of our coworkers seeing us out and about.”
“I had a feeling you’d say that, which is why I was thinking we could go out of town. We could both take tomorrow off and spend it in Vegas.”
I laugh. “We can’t do that.”
“Why not? If we leave now we can get to Vegas before midnight. Which will give us enough time to rest and explore the city tomorrow and be back in time for work the day after.
“And what would we do with Brady?”
“I spoke to Lucas about this, he told me he hasn’t seen his nephew since he’s been here. We could drop Brady off with Lucas and pick him back up when we get back in town tomorrow night.”
“I don’t know…” Being the planner I am, I’m not comfortable with this kind of spontaneity. “Would we be able to get plane tickets and a room on such short notice?”
“Babe, I have access to a private jet and my family owns several hotels in Vegas. So we’re good on those fronts.”
Although I’m trying, I can’t come up with a single reason why we shouldn’t do this.
“Please, say yes. I want to spend the whole day with you in Sin City.”
How could anyone turn that down?
“Fine, let’s go to Vegas.”
“Yeah!”
He picks me up, spins me around a couple of times, then returns me so the ground and kisses the hell out of me. I’m not sure whether I’m dizzy from having been spun around or from the kiss. Either way, this man is rocking my world, and I would have it no other way.
“If we leave now and get packed, we can be in the air in an hour and a half to two hours.”
We both make the necessary arrangements so we won’t be missed tomorrow at work and head off.
I worry that, being the workaholics we are, someone might get suspicious that Adam and I would be missing for the whole day tomorrow. However, I dismiss that thought because I figure even if people are paying that much attention to Adam, no one thinks that deeply about my whereabouts.
When I get home, I relieve Fiona then pack a quick bag for Brady and a bag for me.
Before I know it, Adam is downstairs waiting for us in a town car.
