“It will take me a while to get used to all of this.”
“Being pampered? Or having me underfoot?” I draw circles on her thigh. “We never talked about what’s next for us. If you don’t want me staying in your home, I’ll move back to Pine Ridge until the house is complete.” We’ve spent every night since the night we played poker wrapped around each other in bed. I never asked her permission or if she’s comfortable. It just…became a habit. “I don’t want to take advantage if things are moving too quickly. I don’t want to leave, but I will.”
“About that.” She scrambles off my lap and jogs down to her bedroom.
I follow her with my heart in my stomach. “Zoe, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
She meets me in the doorway, bottom lip tucked between her teeth, hands behind her back. “I think…”
I press my thumb to her lip and cradle her jaw. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have assumed. We’re moving too fast. I get it.”
She lifts a key from behind her back. “You’re moving in, so stop babbling.”
I grip the key. “I’m moving in.”
“We’ll need to rearrange the closet because goodness knows you are a clothes whore and all of your cashmere T-shirts need their own little shrines, but yeah, I think we can make it work.”
I pin her against the wall. “I love it when you’re bossy.”
“I know. Now…” She threads our fingers together, key secure between our palms. “Take me back to bed.”
“Tired?”
“Not exactly.” She fingers the buttons on her shirt. “I had something else in mind.”
Chapter 25
Zoe
Satisfaction rolls through me as Landon and I walk to The Bright Spot, hand in hand. I’m deliciously sore. We rocked each other’s worlds until the sun came up, and now I want one of Ryan’s coffees to make this morning perfect.
Charlotte, Jack, Greyson, and Paisley sit at the table in the front corner with their heads ducked low.
Francesca beams. “I heard about this.” She waves her hand at our hands. “I needed to see it to believe it. Good for you, Zo. It’s about damn time.” She narrows her gaze at Landon. “Your net worth might be a tad north of mine, but I have resources. You hurt our girl, I hurt you. Got it?”
“I know your dad, so yes, I got it.” Landon’s Adam’s apple bobs. It’s the first time I’ve seen fear in his eyes.
“The regular?” Francesca asks.
“I’m changing things up. Another gingerbread chai please.” Sugar and spice are what this woman needs.
Francesca’s smile widens. “You aren’t a flat white kind of woman. Sugar-free mac nut monstrosity for you?”
“Please.” Landon swipes his credit card.
Charlotte swivels her legs from under the table and stands quickly. “Mr. Prince, a word.” She squeezes my hand. “Zoe, you were right. It seems we’ve made a mistake and need your help.”
“What happened?” Landon asks.
“Mr. Prince, Zoe told us Lucky approached you about building a community of mansions adjacent to the resort.”
“I will never build anything resembling that community.” Landon takes his drink from Francesca.
Charlotte’s shoulders sag, and her body deflates. “Thank goodness.”
Landon’s gaze bounces over the council members. “She told me you approved her idea.”
“Heavens, no.” Charlotte fans her face. “This isn’t Malibu. What would we do with all those empty houses? Not likewecan afford her asking price.”
