“It’s your turn, Sylvie. We talked about it today, and we aren’t going to stop until we find him.”
“I don’t even know where he lives. Or if he lives. Or if he lives and doesn’t want to see me. What if he’s married? What if he hates me for breaking his heart?”
“And what if he doesn’t?” Marge asked, and the weight of her question nearly pushed me under the water. “What if he still loves you and you can finally be together?”
“You owe it to yourself to find out.” Doris crossed her arms. “And we’re going to be right at your side while you do.”
“What about your new life here?” I waved a hand around me.
“It will be here when I get back. We Wilder Widows are sticking together until all our wishes have come true. And yours was to see him again, so that’s what we’re going to do.”
“But how do I even go about finding him?” Just the thought of seeing him again sent my heart racing faster than it had when I’d seen that bull charging up behind me in Pamplona.
“You leave that to me.” Marge slid to the side of the hot tub and dried her hand on a towel. Pulling out her cellphone, she pushed the buttons and held it to her ear. “My daughter is a cop. She’ll find him.”
Holding my breath, I waited to find out my fate. Was it possible I could see Tom again? Did I want to see Tom again? What would he say when he saw me? Questions collided through my mind while I waited.
“Martha, it’s mom,” Marge said into the phone.
Oh, God. She answered. Was this happening?
“No, I’m fine. Sorry, I should have called. I was on a trip.”
We listened while Marge paused.
“No, a big trip. Vegas, Paris, Spain, now I’m in Wyoming. I’m fine. Sorry I worried you.”
Still waiting. Watching.
“I know, I know. I’ll tell you all about it. But right now, I need a favor. I need you to find someone for me. A man.”
More waiting. More watching.
“No, nothing like that. He’s not for me. Turns out I’m a lesbian.”
I choked on the air as my eyes shot open.
“Yeah. Roxy. I’ll introduce you someday. You’ll love her.”
Waiting. So much waiting.
“Yep. She’s a real hot mama. I want to tell you more about her, but first I need you to find that man. Thomas Connolly. Last known whereabouts were,” she placed her hand over the speaker, “Where was he last living, Sylvie?”
“Valley Hills,” I said back.
“Thomas Connolly. Marine. Valley Hills.”
Waiting. More waiting.
“You did? Great! Is he alive?”
Holy shit. She found him already? Is he alive? Waiting...
“Single?”
Holding my breath.
“Great. Get me an address. Thanks, sweetheart. I’ll call you when I get back.”
