I’d never been carefree like Wes, but I so desperately wanted to find a way to satiate my need to be with him again that I convinced myself I could enjoy him while I had him, then let him go when this ended. Just a fling with a great guy for a few days in Russia. Nothing more. As long as I kept myself in that mentality, maybe I could get out of this without destroying my already damaged heart.
He smiled, and I melted into goo on the inside.
Shit. This is gonna be harder than I thought.
CHAPTER TWELVE
Wesley
––––––––
“Holy shit. I got them,” I shouted to Piper.
She tore around the corner of our two-bedroom hotel room we’d rented five days ago after my sister left with Knox and Marcus. “What? Seriously?”
It had taken several days for Oleg to get all the computer equipment I required brought to the hotel so I could search for what I needed, but now that I was up and running, it hadn’t taken long for the program I wrote to start doing its magic.
I spun around my computer screen and pointed to the face of the older Russian man with a thick beard. “Remember this guy? When we watched the footage of my sister in the aparment, he showed up to her a few times.”
Piper slid onto my lap and settled in. Even though we’d been going at it like rabbits for five days, and I should be officially sexed out, the brush of her body on mine immediately lit up all the passionate feelings inside me I didn’t think would ever go out. But now wasn’t the time to toss her over my shoulder and drag her back to bed again. Now was the time to finally unveil the people who threatened my family and me.
“Yeah. I remember seeing him on the footage. Who is he?”
“My facial recognition software identified him. He’s living in Russia as Mikhail Alexeyev, but his real name is Petro Shevchenko.”
“Shevchenko? That’s Ukrainian, isn’t it?”
Pursing my lips, I nodded. “Yep. It is.”
“So, we were right.” She grinned down at me. “They aren’t Russians.”
“We were right.”
“We’re so smart.”
A proud smile lifted her lips before she leaned down and brushed a soft kiss on my lips. It sent my heart pounding and my dick begging to get out of these pants.
Not now, I reminded my overly excited body.
“We are smart. And now we know who’s after me.”
“So, what’s his deal? Why does he want you?”
“Remember how I told you I’d hacked onto Russian servers to poke around and look at what they were up to with nukes?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, how much do you know about the Russian/Ukrainian nuke situation?”
She furrowed her brows and snorted. “Nothing. I pay zero attention to any of that shit.”
“Well, short version is that in the nineties, the Ukrainians were one of the biggest nuke holders in the world after they became independent from the Soviet Union. But... they made an agreement with the Russians and gave them all their nukes.”
Her face scrunched up. “Why would they do that?”
“It was part of a treaty that ensured they would have peace with Russia or some shit, plus they got financial compensation. I honestly don’t remember it all, but bottom line, Russia has the nukes in agreement for peace. Well, the Russians invaded Ukraine some years back, and since then, a lot of Ukrainians are saying it violated their treaty, and now they want their weapons back.”
“Valid.” She shrugged. “I’d want blood if someone betrayed me.”
