“Junior.” He side eyes me. “How did two freshmen get into a 201 class?”
Millie slings her hair over her shoulder. “We’re brilliant.”
“Apparently.” Carter lifts his brow. “Maybe I’ll need tutoring.”
“Somehow, I doubt that.”
He offers his hand. “By the way, Carter Eastman.”
“Haven’t we done this already?” I narrow my eyes.
“Not officially.”
“Oh! Well, Carter Eastman, I’m Lolita Felice Turner.” I take his hand with a grin.
“Lolita, huh?”
“Yeah, now you know why I go by Lola.”
“I like Lolita.” He winks.
“And I’m Amelia Dobson.” She waves from beside me.
Carter leans in, pushing against me. “Carter.” She takes his hand with a firm grip and shakes.
“Nice grip.”
“Thank you, I played softball in high school,” Millie replies as they look at me.
I throw my hands up. “I was a wallflower, never did a thing to stand out.”
“I doubt that.” Carter’s lip quirks.
As we reach the doors to the cafeteria, Carter grabs the handle. “Ladies.” Millie walks through before me, giving him a chance to nab my arm. “When’s your next class?”
“Tomorrow.” I swallow hard.
“Good to know.”
“C’mon you two, I’m hungry!” Millie yells as I slip under Carter’s arm and through the door.
We find seats, order food, and talk for hours. When Millie gets a call, Carter turns to me. “How about we go somewhere we can talk.”
“You mean, alone?”
He chuckles. “Yeah, like grown-ups.”
My stomach knots. Play it cool. “Sure, I can do that.”
“Hey, guys, I need to go.” Millie stands, grabbing her bag. “My roommate has crashed and burned her first day. I think she wants to go home.”
“The first year is the toughest, but she’ll be okay,” Carter says.
I take out my phone, pulling up my contacts. “I need your info!”
“Well, of course.” She takes it and types furiously. “Hit me up later.”
I stand and pull her into a quick hug and shove my phone in my pocket. “Will do, Mill.” She hurries out the door as Carter turns to me.
