“Better bring your wallet, I’m about to take my pound of flesh,” I growl when Lane comes into view.

“I’m on my way, I’ll be there this evening.” Colton ends the call, and I’m positive he knows what I’m about to do.

I shove my cell into my pocket as take-off toward Lane. Crank spots me from across the strip, but there’s no way he can catch me in time. Rage fuels me as Spencer flashes before my eyes.

“Lane!” His name erupts from me like a demon crawling from hell, and I’m fucking bringing hell with me. “If you ever put your hands on her again, you won’t live to tell it.”

“Fuck you, or better yet, how about I fuck your little bitch.” Lane sneers, and it’s just enough to justify me more.

When my fist connects with his jaw, I don’t stop until Crank pulls me off him. Even his own people don’t try to stop me, as I wail on him. Crank grabs me by the arm after my sixth or so punch landed.

Once I’m on my feet, I kick out, nailing him in the side. It’s not until Crank spins me around do I realize; I might have as much damage as I gave Lane. I shake my hand, jerking away from Crank.

“Fuck!” I flex my hand as people run to help Lane. “I broke my hand.”

“What?” He groans. I’m not sure if it’s because of my hand or the fact Spencer and Margo are headed our way. Spencer’s been crying, but it’s her frown that has me concerned.

“I know you’re mad…” I mutter when she reaches us, worried she’s angry with me. But in true Spencer style, she surprises me by throwing her arms me and kissing me breathless. When she’s done, she takes a step back. Tears still streaking her face, she takes my hand, examining it.

She chews on the corner of her bottom lip. “You broke it, although I don’t think it’s bad. Maybe a hairline fracture.”

“I’m sorry, I just lost it.” My heart seizes as I look into her eyes.

“Don’t apologize for standing up for what’s right, or me.” She runs her fingers over my hand. “I’m not sure you’ll be able to drive tomorrow, and his people have called the police.”

A race official walks over to us, his head hanging. “Rush, you might want to call an attorney. I disagree with this, not after what he did to Spencer.”

“Alright, thank you,” Spencer replies before I can and reaches into my pocket. She motions for Margo, scrolling through my phone. “He needs ice before we go to the hospital.”

“I’ll have Crank get the truck.” Margo nods, jogging off in the direction they just came from. I glance at Spencer as she puts my cell to her ear.

She reaches out, running her hand over my jaw. “Boone? Hi, this is Spencer Woods. Rush, and I have a problem.”

“Rush!” Margo yells from the fence. I take Spencer’s freehand with my good one and lead us over to her.

“We’re in Bristol.” She pauses. “I can get him here.”

“Colton’s on the way, I called him before I beat his ass.”

Spencer shakes her head. “Did you hear him? Well, a defense attorney would be best.”

“I-I…” I try to speak before Boone says anything I’m going to regret. Spencer’s eyes cut to mine and narrow. Shit!

“Oh, really. No, I had no idea that Rush is a licensed defense attorney.” I shrug, grinning sheepishly. “No, not your fault at all. Thank you.”

She hands my phone back to me. Margo slinks into the truck without looking back. “I planned on telling you.”

“He’s on the way with your Dad.” She turns to the truck, climbing in with her ass in my face. “Not how I wanted to meet your parents.”

“Is it too soon to let you know I have someone to drive for me if I need them.” I slide in beside her, hoping she doesn’t do me bodily harm.

“You’re probably going to need them.” She quips, making me frown.

“Sorry, but I couldn’t let this slide.” I motion to her arm. Her lashes flutter against her cheeks, and another tear falls.

“I love you.” Spencer leans into my side, holding my injured hand all the way to the hospital.

After a long evening, we settle back in at a local hotel. Dad and Boone are staying, so we decided to join them while Margo and Crank head back. Spencer called Chase; he’s on his way to drive for me in qualifying and the race. I lose the points, but the team still gets a few.
