Jasper didn’t seem interested in letting him go—his fingers closing in a tighter grip in the leather of his jacket. Hawk placed his hands over Jasper’s.
“You need to eat, Jasper. I’m worried about you.”
At the swipe of Jasper’s tongue across Hawk’s bottom lip, he groaned. Feisty is right.
“Kiss me again, Hawk. Then I’ll eat.”
Hawk grinned. He couldn’t deny how incredible it made him feel to know how much his mate desired him. As he leaned down to press his mouth to Jasper’s, he closed his eyes, anxious to again experience the warmth of his lips on Jasper’s…palm?
Hawk’s eyes flew open and he jerked back. “Why’d you do that?”
The joyful expression and contented smile Jasper had radiated up at him only seconds before had been replaced by a frown.
I can’t keep up with this kid.
“Wait a minute. I just remembered a couple things.”
Jasper placed his hand on Hawk’s chest as if keeping him at a respectable distance. Hawk didn’t release him, however.
“Oh? What now?”
“I thought you were a beta. No way could we scent each other as mates if you were. Is that what you’ve been hiding from me? That you’re not a beta?”
Hawk snorted. “More like my dad’s been hiding it from me.”
Jasper’s forehead creased as he tilted his head. “Huh?”
“Long story. Basically, I’ve wondered for a while now whether I was actually an Alpha and once I scented you as my mate, I knew. My dad confirmed my suspicions last night.”
“Whoa. That’s intense.” Jasper narrowed his eyes. “Next question. Who’s Cam?”
Hawk held in a groan. “Let me guess. Your father isn’t the only person you eavesdrop on.”
“It’s one of my superpowers.”
“Uh-huh.” Hawk smirked. “I’ll make a deal with you. Let’s sit down, have some breakfast and you can ask me all the questions you want about anything.”
Jasper nodded. “Deal.”
Hawk had anticipated that after the kiss-block, Jasper would reject any touching. But his omega proved him wrong by taking his hand as they made their way to the campfire. He understood. Now that their bond had been acknowledged, not touching each other was going to be almost impossible.
Hawk had already gotten out what they’d need for their meal, so he prepared two plates, making sure to put plenty of meat on Jasper’s. While rummaging through what his dad had packed, he’d also discovered some small bottles of juice.
He needs protein as well as some energy from the carbs.
They didn’t talk much while they ate. It was clear that Jasper really was starving, and Hawk had to remind him more than once to slow down or he’d make himself sick.
Jasper licked his fingers. “It’s just so damn good. Nothing has tasted so amazing in like, forever.”
Hawk continued to observe Jasper as he ate, the reality of what storming in and bringing down the prison where Jasper had been kept would mean. It wasn’t only a matter of finding where it was located. There would also be gods knew how many guards, staff, doctors and whoever those Russians were who’d been a part of kidnapping Jasper.
And the prisoners. They could be in bad shape, not able to run.
It wasn’t only Asha, the spirit guide, they’d have to speak with. Meeting with the Wolf Creek Pack would also be crucial if they had any hope of helping the omegas being experimented on.
We can’t do this alone. We’ll need the blessing of their Alpha, Nic Petrov.
Jasper was so full, he wasn’t sure he could move. As it was, he could barely keep his eyes open. But he had to know a few things before he passed out again. While he realized he had a leg up on the boyfriend by being the fated mate, he still wasn’t interested in sharing. It also made him feel kind of bad for Cam. The poor guy was in love with Hawk and Hawk wasn’t in love with him.
