Nic peered over his shoulder as the last council members left the room. He turned to Brandon.
“Hey. Have a few minutes?”
Brandon let the bag slide off his shoulder then set it on the table. “Sure. We should probably strategize anyway.”
“True. But I’m thinking we can meet in the morning for that before you leave. I’m assuming you’ll need to get everything arranged for while you’re gone?”
“Yeah. But that won’t take long.”
He didn’t plan on hanging around in Denali Junction with Sascha for too long. A plan had begun to form on how to handle things with the omega as his mind had wandered during the meeting.
“You can take a couple days if you’d like. I think we’re all still reeling from what’s happened.”
“Nah. I’m cool.” Brandon shoved his hands into his jacket pockets. “So, what’s on your mind?”
“The pregnant omega you brought here. Has he seen the healer yet?”
Brandon nodded. “He did. Asha said he’s doing well, other than being a little undernourished. But she said he and the baby should be fine.”
“No leftover effects from the suppressants?”
Brandon didn’t want Nic to know how he’d grilled Asha regarding Sascha’s wellbeing until she’d tossed him out of her cabin. Discussing his secret mate at all was uncomfortable enough.
“No. She said that other than his normal inability to shift due to pregnancy, all of his other shifter capabilities are intact.”
Nic nodded with a smile. “Good, that’s really good. There are two other rescued omegas who are also pregnant, but not nearly as far along as Sascha. We’ve arranged housing for the three of them. We thought it would be nice for them to all stay together. They’re the only ones who can understand what each other is going through.”
The blood seemed to drain from Brandon. He hadn’t anticipated that the packs would keep the omegas together. His vague plan had been to tell anyone inquiring about Sascha was that he’d be making sure he got settled. Clearly, he hadn’t thought things all the way through.
“Oh. Uh, actually, Sascha will be coming with me back to Denali Junction.”
Nic frowned. “Why?”
Good question. “I want to make sure he stays safe.”
Nic blinked several times. “Why wouldn’t he be safe here?”
“Uh…” Brandon’s mind was like a deep abyss of nothing.
“Is it because you think any deltas or Russians who got away would check here for them first?”
Brandon nodded. “Yeah. That works.”
“Excuse me?”
Brandon coughed into his fist. “I meant, yes. That’s what I was thinking.”
“Hmm…” Nic rubbed his chin, his brow furrowed. “That’s a possibility. Okay. I’ll see if someone at the Bering Sea Pack can take the two omegas, then you take Sascha.” Nic gave Brandon a hearty pat on his back. “Good thinking. Why don’t we meet at my place tomorrow morning around seven? We should be done in plenty of time for you to get on the road by nine. I know you’ve got a long drive ahead of you.”
Brandon attempted his best version of a relaxed smile. “Sounds fine.”
Nic smiled back. “Great. Do you know where the rooming house is?”
Brandon nodded. “Yes. Cameron, the beta who brought Hawk here, he told me.”
Nic didn’t need to know that he wouldn’t be sleeping there but would be lurking in the bushes outside of Nic’s dad’s place all night. Since that was where Sascha would be with his friend Jasper, he needed to make certain that his omega remained safe.
“Okay then. See you tomorrow.”
While Nic walked away, Brandon made a show of checking for something in his messenger bag. He waited until Nic was gone and no one else was around. Once he located Cameron and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, he planned on slipping unseen into the darkness.
