Cameron held up his hands. “Whoa, hold on. Don’t get so worked up. You’re right. But please don’t get upset. It makes me feel bad after all you’ve been through.” Cameron sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. “Look. I’m not saying you shouldn’t know what’s going on, you totally should. But Alpha Brandon was just as shocked as you were to find out he had a fated mate. Especially since—” Cameron’s eyes widened. “Dammit. This is why I need to keep my big mouth shut. I’m always blurting shit out I should keep to myself.”
Sascha narrowed his eyes. “Especially since what?”
Cameron winced as if he were in pain. “You see…Brandon is sort of closeted.”
Sascha clenched his fists then sucked in a deep breath. “That’s it. I’m outta here.”
He reached for the door handle, yanking on it when Cameron’s hand landed on his arm. Sascha shook it off.
“Leave me alone!”
Sascha shoved the door open and took a breath as he was about to jump out. He paused. What am I doing? He’d been so emotional lately, and where the hell did he think he was going wearing only socks and still so weak he could barely keep upright? He bit his lip, his anger still simmering below the surface, as he contemplated what he should do.
Cameron appeared before him, holding up his hands, palm out. “Please don’t, Sascha. I don’t want you or the baby to get hurt.”
Sascha wasn’t sure whether to believe him. Why would this stranger care? Maybe there were shifters like that in the Alliance, but he’d never met any. The Deltas were all about themselves. Only his mom, Jasper and his family minus the father were any good form what he could tell.
“Are you sure it doesn’t have more to do with you being scared over what Brandon might do to you if anything happened to me?”
The moment the words left his mouth, Sascha regretted them. Cameron looked as if someone had slapped him.
“Sure, I don’t want Brandon to get mad. That’s true. But the first thing I thought of was you being too cold and getting sick or falling or something. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you, you seem like a sweet guy.”
Sascha snorted. “I do? I wasn’t very sweet just now.” Sascha hung his head. “I’m sorry, Cameron. I haven’t felt like myself for a long time. And I don’t know if the pregnancy is affecting my emotions r not, but it seems like it is.”
“Call me Cam. All my friends do.”
Sascha lifted his gaze and marveled at the warm smile radiating back at him. He was so ashamed of himself. Cam was one of the nicest shifters he’d met since he and Jasper had become friends at the age of five.
“Cam.” He smiled back. “I’ll behave myself and get back in the truck.”
Cam offered him his hand to help get him settled in the front seat again. Sascha grabbed Cam’s shoulder as he turned to walk away.
“Will you still sit in the truck with me? Even though I’m a brat?”
“You’re not a brat.” Cam gave him a lopsided grin. “My mom had lots of pups and she was cranky a lot.”
Sascha burst out laughing. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
As Cam closed the door then made his way back to the driver’s side, Sascha mused that it would be awesome if the beta could be around all the time. Maybe Brandon could hire him to be one of the Guardian’s at Denali Junction. After all, his new Alpha didn’t seem too interested in him or the baby. If he and Jasper were going to be icing hundreds of miles apart, he’d like to have a new friend.
He didn’t think he could stand being alone anymore.
