What’s happening?
Lanlin grabs Daire by his curls and yanks the fae’s head to the side. “Time to fulfill our deal. You know what I promised.”
The light in Daire’s eyes fades. “Aye, drink. I am at your mercy. A fae of the House of Thorn doesn’t break his deals.”
Lanlin’s fangs grow even longer. The moonlight gleams off them.
Daire rests his hand on my head like he needs the connection.
Panicked, I can sense the sudden spike of fear through our bond.
Normally, Daire is as addicted to being Lanlin’s Blood Lover as Lanlin is to drinking his blood.
It’s not healthy, but the Shadow Vampires’ trick is luring in their prey. Fae blood is addictive, but I believe that the vampire bite is just as addictive.
Why then is Daire frightened of it now?
“Wait…” I struggle to speak through the waves of pleasure still washing over me.
My heat has abated, however, probably because it was a fake one triggered by the blue lotus wine. It must only have needed Lanlin and me to knot.
Still locked with me, however, Lanlin sinks his fangs savagely into Daire’s throat.
My eyes widen.
This isn’t a gentle, ritualistic feeding.
Blood drips from Daire’s neck onto my chin.
“S-s-stop,” I gasp. “You’ve taken enough. Too fucking much.”
Lanlin sinks his fangs deeper into Daire’s neck, however, sucking harder.
Daire’s eyelashes flutter, and his face becomes worryingly waxy and pale.
“Fucking stop.” I struggle, shoving at Lanlin, but it feels like he is carved out of the same limestone as the hulking pyramids. “You’re killing him.”
Still Lanlin doesn’t let go.
I sob, when Daire slumps in Lanlin’s hold. His lax hand drops from my head.
I can’t feel him anymore.
I can’t feel my Alpha.
I howl, using a move that I learned in the academy to twist to the side, sliding my hand to the dagger that Daire himself stripped me of earlier and placed by my head.
I slice it up toward Lanlin’s throat, and he can’t stop me because he’s draining the life from my soulmate. “Take your fucking fangs out of his throat now.”
I’m shaking.
Lanlin and I are still locked together by his knot, and my muscles are aching and weak.
Daire isn’t moving at all anymore. His wings hang limp between his shoulder blades.
Lanlin’s knot deflates.
My mouth twists in distress.
