"Respondent may call their witness."
Priya touched my elbow. "You're up."
I stood. My legs held. The walk from the table to the witness stand was twelve steps. I counted them to keep my body in the room and my mind on the ground. The chair was wooden. The armrest was smooth. I sat down. I folded my hands.
"Please state your name for the record."
"Thea Calloway."
"Ms. Calloway, can you describe your involvement in this matter, starting from the beginning?"
I took a breath. The courtroom was quiet. The judge was looking at me. Kira was looking at me. Declan was looking at me from the table.
I told them.
"I applied to adopt a child through Bright Horizons Family Services. My ex-husband and I were matched with a baby girl. The file described a heart-shaped birthmark on the inside of her left wrist. I memorized every detail in that file." My voice was steady. "The birth mother changed her mind. The adoption fell through. My marriage ended in the aftermath."
I told them about the night on the porch. "She was wrapped in a blanket, tucked against the doorframe. I picked her up. The crying stopped the moment I held her." I paused. "I saw the birthmark. The same one. The heart on her left wrist. I recognized this baby. She was the child I'd been preparing to bring home."
I told them about handing Lena to CPS. My voice stayed level. My hands stayed folded. But my thumbnails were pressed together under the ledge of the witness box, the pressure keeping me anchored.
"I transferred the baby to the CPS worker. I had to uncurl her fingers from my shirt. One at a time." I stopped and breathed. "She cried. I stood in my doorway and listened to the crying until the car turned the corner and I couldn't hear it anymore."
I told them about Declan. The screaming baby. "He'd been up for over twenty-four hours. He told me the night nurse couldn't calm her. The pediatrician said nothing was wrong. He tried everything." I looked at Declan. "The moment I held her, she stopped crying. She grabbed my collar and fell asleep in two minutes."
I told them about the penthouse. The feedings. The nights. The hospital. The fever.
"Ms. Calloway." Judge Adeyemi's voice was clear. She was leaning forward slightly, her reading glasses in her hand. "What is your relationship to this child?"
The courtroom went still. The stenographer's keys stopped. I could hear the ventilation system humming above us.
I looked at Declan. He was watching me. His face was open — the mask down, the charm gone, just the man. His eyes were bright, and his hand on the table was gripping the edge, and he gave me the smallest nod.
I looked at the judge.
"I'm the woman who held her when no one else could."
My eyes moved across the courtroom. They found Kira. She was sitting very still. Her hands were in her lap. Her jaw was tight. But her eyes were on me, and they were wet.
"I don't have a legal word for what that makes me." My voice dropped. "But I know what it means."
Kira blinked. A tear ran down her left cheek. She didn't wipe it. She squeezed her eyes shut. Her mouth trembled. She opened her eyes and wiped the tear with the back of her hand. And then she did something I didn't expect.
She nodded, and she smiled. I saw it. I held it. I didn't look away.
The courtroom was quiet.
Judge Adeyemi reviewed her notes. She removed her glasses. She placed them on the bench. She looked at Kira's table. Then at ours.
"The court has reviewed the evidence and testimony presented by both parties." Her voice was unhurried. "The petitioner, Ms. Solis, is the biological mother of the minor child. The court acknowledges the circumstances described in her testimony, including the unauthorized actions of Mr. Hale's former employee."
My hand found Declan's under the table. His fingers closed around mine.
"However." The judge paused. "The record establishes a clear pattern of voluntary relinquishment. Ms. Solis placed the child for adoption through a licensed agency. She rescinded. When the child was returned to her custody, she relinquished a second time by leaving the child at a private residence without arrangement, without notification to authorities, and with a handwritten note that constitutes a voluntary surrender."
The courtroom was so quiet I could hear Declan breathing beside me.
"The biological father, Mr. Hale, was never notified of the pregnancy. His parental rights were never terminated. Upon learning of the child's existence, he took immediate steps to establish paternity and was granted legal custody through proper judicial channels. He has maintained a stable home, consistent caregiving, and full compliance with the custodial order."
