When he didn’t speak, she said, “I know that is an enormous amount and I don’t—”

“I will give you the money.”

Annis blinked. “You will?”

“Yes, of course,” he sounded almost annoyed that she would doubt him.

“Thank you. That is very kind—”

“I can have a bank draft for you by tomorrow. Is that soon enough?”

“That would be lovely. I am so grateful, my lord. I am also sor—”

“You do not need to thank me, nor do you need to apologize.”

She had once thought he bore a resemblance to Alexander the Great. Right then he looked at her the way she imagined that long-dead king might have looked at a vanquished and despised enemy.

Annis nodded.

“Is there anything else I should know?” he asked.

“No.”

“Very well. I shall see you tomorrow.” He stood and took her hand, bowing over it. “You have made me very happy, Miss Bowman.”

If that was true, then Annis wondered why he looked like a man who was going to the gallows.
