Anouk’s expression remains neutral. “The floor is yours, Elder.”
“Thank you, Coven Leader.” Cordelia’s smile widens, warm and maternal and completely false. “It has come to my attention that you have been conducting certain aspects of the current investigation in… unusual ways.”
“If you have concerns about my methods, I’m happy to discuss them.”
“My concerns go beyond methods.” Cordelia pauses, letting silence build. Every eye in the room is fixed on her now. “They extend to your judgment. To your objectivity. To whether you can continue to lead this coven effectively when you have become so… entangled with outside influences.”
The word drops into the silence like a stone.
Entangled.
There’s a collective intake of breath from everyone in the chamber. Anouk’s magic spikes in response to the accusation—wild and hot and barely contained.
“Perhaps the coven leader has become too close to certain shifter elements.” Cordelia continues, her voice dripping with false concern. “Too close to provide the unbiased leadership our community requires. Too compromised to—”
“If you have an accusation to make, Elder Cordelia, make it now.”
Anouk’s voice cuts through the chamber like a blade. She’s on her feet, her posture rigid with controlled fury. The enchanted windows are flickering, their peaceful sunset view stuttering like a damaged film.
Her magic is screaming.
“Very well.” Cordelia’s expression shifts, the motherly veneer slipping to reveal the calculation beneath. “Some of us are concerned about your relationship with Alpha Sternwolf. Your frequent visits to wolf territory. Your private meetings. Your obvious… attachment.” She gestures toward me with theatrical distaste. “It seems inappropriate for a coven leader to be so entangled with a shifter.”
The word again. Entangled. As if it’s shameful. As if it’s wrong.
I feel the wolf rise in response—protective fury, the instinct to defend what’s mine surging against my restraint. I force myself to stay still, to let Anouk handle this, to trust her to—
“Entangled.” Anouk’s voice has gone dangerously quiet. “That’s the word you choose. As if working with the Protection Network to investigate a murder is somehow inappropriate. As if cooperation between our communities is shameful.”
“The investigation is one matter. Your personal relationship with the wolf alpha is another.” Cordelia’s smile returns, sharp-edged. “Unless you’re prepared to deny that relationship exists?”
Silence falls over the chamber.
Every eye moves between Anouk and me. Every breath is held. Every heartbeat suspended in anticipation of her answer.
I watch her face. Watch the battle between pride and truth, between political calculation and personal honesty. Watch the moment she makes her decision.
“I’m not going to deny anything.”
The words are calm. Measured. Devastating.
“I’m not going to pretend that investigating with Alpha Sternwolf has been purely professional. I’m not going to hide behind propriety and distance because some members of this council find honesty inconvenient.” Her gaze sweeps the room, landing on face after face before settling on Cordelia. “And I’m certainly not going to apologize for caring about someone just because it makes certain people uncomfortable.”
“Caring about—” Cordelia sputters. “This is exactly what I—”
“What you what, Elder?” Anouk steps forward, her magic crackling visibly around her. “What you feared? What you’ve spent forty years trying to prevent? What the Preservers have been working to stop since before either of us was born?”
The accusation lands like a thunderbolt.
I see Cordelia’s mask crack—just for an instant, a flash of genuine fury beneath the careful performance. Then she recovers, her expression settling into wounded innocence.
“I don’t know what you’re implying, but—”
“I’m not implying anything.” Anouk’s voice rises. “I’m stating facts. You’ve been pushing to shut down this investigation since the day Mathilda died. You’ve questioned my judgment, my methods, my loyalties. And now you’re standing in this chamber suggesting that my relationships disqualify me from leadership.”
Her magic surges.
And I feel it—the pull, the call, the recognition that’s been building between us for so long. The wolf responds without conscious thought, rising to meet her power with my own. Heat races through my body. Light gathers at the edges of my vision.
