“Thanks. I swear, one day I’ll be able to walk without…” My words trailed off as I finally looked at his face. “You’re not wearing your mask.”

My memory hadn’t done him a lick of justice. Blond hair such a pale shade it almost looked silver was paired with baby blue eyes, long lashes, a straight-bridged nose, and a jaw so sharp it could cut glass.

“What of it?” he asked, though there seemed to be color in his cheeks not normally present. “You said so earlier. Shadow doesn’t wear his. Reign and I agreed to do the same.”

“Wow.” I smiled. “Is that a blush I see?”

Draven responded with a disgruntled noise and turned away from me.

“Hey now,” Reign said, appearing beside the big blond spy. Also mask-free. Like Draven, the man was smoking hot, with high cheek bones, perfectly shaped lips, and a strong jaw. “Don’t go falling in love with V, darlin’, or I’ll get jealous. I saw you first.”

“Call him darling again, and it’ll be your head,” Maddox barked from his place by the fire.

“So violent. I like it.” As Reign flashed another smile, an impish glint reflected in his heterochromatic eyes. Without his mask, the crooked set of his lips drove that impishness home even more.

Before Maddox could murder Reign, Briar guided our big scowling grump to the table and sat him down as Fane, Nina, and Cyan entered the room.

“Evan!” Nina gave me a toothy grin as she pushed the serving cart to the table. Her flicking tail matched her enthusiastic tone. “Nina brought yummiesss!”

I tried to help them serve the food, but she patted the top of my head and told me to sit back down. Which was hard. I hated sitting and doing nothing when others were working.

Lake washed his hands in the water basin in the corner of the parlor before sitting beside Rowan, telling him he should go wash his hands too.

“Go order someone else around, pup.”

Whack.

“Fine, I’m going.” Rowan stood from his chair. “You know, that tail of yours is a deadly weapon. It’s rude to hit people with it.”

“You’re not a person,” Lake said. “You’re Rowan.”

That caused our snaggle toothed spy to release one of his raspy laughs.

Fane ladled stew into bowls and cut into the bread loaves, handing out thick pieces for everyone. Nina and Cyan went around the table filling everyone’s goblet with their choice of either ale, a deep red wine, or honey mead.

I declined all three and chose water instead. Best for me not to drink. I was a total lightweight and would probably end up twerking on the table by the end of the night after only two glasses.

“Good evening,” a smooth, silky voice came from the doorway. “Apologies for my tardiness. I was reading and lost track of time.”

My heart skidded to a halt before restarting, beating faster now.

“Milord.” Fane bowed to Onyx before pulling out the chair at the head of the table. “A pleasure for you to join us.”

Onyx thanked him and sat.

It was the first time I’d seen Onyx since we’d said goodnight in the doorway of his room last night. And as his red eyes shifted to me, the nerves in my belly went nuts, flapping around like huge bats on Halloween night.

I quickly averted my gaze from him. The lack of eye contact didn’t help much though. The air was charged with those electric tingles that seemed to stir when he was close.

“Nina?” I whispered, flapping my fingers at her. She perked up and rushed over, her black tail dancing behind her. “I’ve changed my mind. I’ll take some of that ale.”

Good news? Drinking certainly took the edge off. Halfway through the first glass, my muscles started to unwind, and it felt like a warm, cozy blanket draped over my body. But then I met a hard gaze from the head of the table, destroying those happy little warm tingles.

Onyx’s red eyes raked over me as he drank from his goblet.
