He pulls me in, his forehead pressing against mine, our mouths breathing into one another. “No more fighting me, Leah. No more denying what this is.”

I look up at him, into the dark abysses of glass. “What is this? I’m having a hard time figuring it out.”

“It’s two people who have been bound to each other for years, yet keep pushing each other away. It’s the fine line between heaven and hell and a relationship that could destroy us both. It’s a guy who stupidly went out with a girl’s friend as a way to push her out of his mind, but it only made things worse. It’s a guy who fell for his best friend’s girl when he was a teenager and stayed away from her as a punishment. To her. To himself. To the world. I’m done with staying away from you.”

Adam puts a hand to my head and holds me tight. Leaning in, he continues, “It’s a guy who has wanted a girl since he was eighteen years old. You’re all I’ve ever wanted. You wrecked me a long time ago, and I will never be repaired. Hell, I don’t ever want to be repaired. I love you, Leah.”

My heart speeds up, and my eyes and mouth widen at the words. “You love me?”

“I don’t know why. You’re the biggest pain in the ass I’ve ever met.” He smiles. “I’m in love with you. Always have been. Always will be.”

If he’s been wrecked by me, then I’ve been shattered, damaged, destroyed by him. And, by God, if being in a million pieces means I can belong to him, then I don’t ever want to be whole.

He holds all my pieces in his hands.

I lean forward and kiss him. Wrapping my hands around his neck, I pull his mouth into mine and devour him. Feeling weak in the knees, I cling to him to remain upright. His tongue searches for mine and caresses it, eliciting sweet whimpers from me. He moans into my mouth as I weave my hands through his hair and pull lightly at the ends. He grabs my ass and pulls me further into him. Groin-to-groin, we are wrapped up in each other. I hear cars passing and the music coming from inside the bar. His teeth nip at my lip, and I sigh into his mouth, feeling the burn and wanting more.

I fall back, using the truck behind me to steady myself, and say, “We have to get out of here.”

My heart is beating out of my chest, and from the sounds of the short pants coming from his mouth, so is his. His lips part, and his chest hitches. I wait for him to make a move.

“Are you okay?” I ask.

He blinks and then shakes his head. “Yes. I was just trying to figure out if I should take you back to your house, like a gentleman, or to mine, like a criminal.”

I laugh. It’s big and loud. And it feels good. “Take me home, Officer.” I hold up my wrists in front of my body.

With a sly smile on his mouth, Adam opens the car door, leans in to open his glove box, and comes out with a pair of handcuffs. He slaps them on my wrists.

When I am in place, seat belt secured, he closes the door and then walks around to the other side of the car. Before he turns on the ignition, he leans over, places his hands on the sides of my face, and kisses me. I lift my hands to touch him but only get as far as his shirt to gently pull it in.

His forehead leans against mine. His breath is warm against my lips. “We have so many things we have to talk about, but all I want to do is kiss you.”

Being with him in his truck, tasting him, touching him, reminds me of the moment in the woods—when his chest was against mine and I held him firm in my hands, low on my belly.

My skin is on fire with the memory of having him so close to being inside me yet so far away. If I could use my hands, I’d grab him fiercely and rapidly undress him.

It could be the rush of our fight or the thrill of finding out he’s in love with me, but whatever it is, it has me horny, like a teenager on prom night.

“Touch me,” I plead, pulling his bottom lip into mine. My teeth graze his moistened lip, tugging at the end. “I know you want to do this right. Trust me, I do, too. But I’ve been thirsty for you for seven years, and if I don’t get a drink, I might burst out of my skin.”

His pupils dilate. A slight moan escapes his throat. “We should wait.”

“I can’t. Please. I won’t be able to discuss anything serious because my brain will be too distracted with how badly I want you.”

I lean forward and suck on his neck. He groans.

His hands slide down my arms and settle on my hips. “Only because I will do anything to make my girl happy.”

With a firm grip, claiming what’s his, he lifts my hips and pushes my skirt up until it’s bunched around my waist. He then slides his thumbs into the sides of my thong and pulls it down. I lift my hips and help him remove the pretty piece of lace and satin.

“It’s protocol to remove any dangerous items from the criminal when detained,” he says.

My breath hitches at the sexy growl in his voice.

Adam starts the car and drives down Main Street. The anticipation builds in my belly. I’m sitting here with my bare ass on the leather. My legs are closed, but that does little for modesty since I’m fully exposed.

He makes a turn, away from the heavy traffic of central Cedar Ridge, and heads down the dark, winding roads, toward the outskirts of town. The car is silent. There’s just the purr of the engine and the wind passing by the windows.
