Frowny tilts his head—still standing at the mouth of the room. Our eyes lock and I suck in a breath. Even from here, I can see the way his jaw is working. Tensing and loosening, tensing and loosening. The lines furrowing his brow deepen. He’s practically scowling at me.

“Marcus, come over here,” Selene calls.

His eyes briefly flick to her, then they’re back on me.

Intense and I’m thinking brown, but it’s hard to tell from this distance. He’s broody and clearly moody, and obviously takes an instant dislike to me.

Well, whatever. I’m flipping delightful.

It’s too bad too because he’s unequivocally the hottest man I’ve ever seen. I have the most ridiculous urge to pull out a measuring tape and see how thick those thighs truly are.

He bares his teeth, all but sneering at me.

Rude.

“Have to go,” he says.

His voice is so deep and rumbly that my panties are instantly soaked. Well, that’s inconvenient.

His eyes flick to my face again. More frowning. “Sorry.” He nods, then he turns and flees.

“Holy carp,” I murmur.

Selene snorts. “I forgot about your unique way of cursing.” She puts her napkin down on the table and stands. “I’ll be right back.”

Marcus

Mine.

My bear wants out.

Wants to fuck. Wants to bite. Wants to claim.

My cock is so hard right now, I might have a permanent zipper imprint on it. It leaks and throbs as if it has its own heartbeat.

No.

This cannot be happening.

Not now.

Definitely not her.

She’s a human, for fuck’s sake.

I storm outside and take a deep breath through my mouth to try to rid myself of her smell.

Bears aren’t known for our keen sense of smell, but being near a fated mate brings every sense to full attention. Fated mates are rare. At least in the bear community.

One look, one scent, and everything inside me screamed to go to her.

“Marcus! Wait!” Selene comes rushing out of Jax’s and catches up with me. “What was that? You couldn’t even walk over and—” she gasps as I turn to face her. “Your eyes. They’re red.” She grins widely and bounces on her feet. “I knew it!”

“No, Selene. Just fucking no.” I wave my arms dismissively. “You know how I feel about humans.”
