“I know, my love.”

The cat got out of the basket in no hurry at all, walked the length of the rock, sat down on the highest part of it with her tail around her feet, and did not look at any of us again.

Connor crossed the stone to me.

“I want to check your left wing,” he said. “Lift it.”

I lifted it.

“You were hit,” he said, examining my wing membrane. “I saw you react. Do we need to stay the night on this island for you to recover?”

I looked at the island and raised a dragon eyebrow.

“Are we at low tide or high tide?” Moerrven asked. No one had an answer to that, but I supposed a higher tide could make our tiny island quite a bit tinier.

Connor continued to examine me, wind whipping water at us, and finally I gave up on trying to eye-contact him until he realized I was fine and transformed into my human form, spinning around for him.

“See? I’m fine. Stop being such a worrywart.”

“You transformed without me touching your head.”

I nodded. “My control is improving. It comes from being able to think very many very detailed horny thoughts.”

Connor blew out a breath. “I’m glad. But you’re sure you’re okay?”

“You don’t have to worry about me. Maybe about Mr. Stoic over there.” I pointed at Kessrin, who was pretending not to hear us despite being ten feet away.

“Fuck you. That was scary as hell. How could I not worry? I just watched you get hit by wizard magic. And you’re…” He bit his bottom lip, then shrugged. “Mine.”

“I was hit, but I’m a dragon, and I’m quite magnificent.”

“Oallian—”

Kessrin turned suddenly, his dragon eyes narrowing. Then, in an instant, he was a man. A naked, magnificent, gorgeous, very angry man.

“Kess. Do you want a robe?” Connor turned to the basket, but Kess was already stalking toward me.

“Magnificent,” Kessrin said. “Wonderful. Then I must ask you. What the fuck were you thinking?”

Kessrin knew how to curse? I cleared my throat. “I was thinking that a wizard of the Order had worked out what you were.”

Moerrven stood, looked at the angry naked man, then grabbed his cat. “We’ll just be in the basket,” he said, and dragged Sky off to Kessrin’s basket.

“Kess,” Connor said, stepping forward and putting a hand on Kessrin’s shoulder. “Let’s just talk this out.”

Kessrin narrowed his eyes at Connor. “Don’t you dare talk to me. I don’t want to hear it. And Oallian? I had it under control. He thought I was a fucking elf.”

“He wanted to own you. He can’t own you!”

Kessrin growled. “Just fucking admit you lost it. We had a plan, Oallian, and you put everyone at risk by losing control. You could have killed Connor!”

I swallowed, glancing towards Connor. “No. I wouldn’t have.”

“You didn’t even know where Connor was when you started tearing things apart. He could have been in one of those rooms. I thought he was—” Kessrin made a frustrated noise, pacing three feet across the rock, then back to poke me in the chest again. “He’s mortal.”

“I knew where he was.”

“How could you know where he was? You ripped off the entire fucking west facade. What if he had been in one of those rooms?”
