“Sorry, running down here was harder than I thought.” I force a laugh that sounds fake even to my own ears, but he seems to believe it.

“You shouldn’t be running at all.” His hand rubs over my belly, and I want to step away, but I don’t. “Let’s eat.”

He walks me to my seat, pushing me in before he takes his seat.

The quiet is suffocating.

“How was your trip?”

He doesn’t answer for a moment, and I look up from my plate to see him lost in his phone, a deep frown pulling at his lips.

I eat; the noodles taste bland and boring despite the sauce that smells of garlic and tomatoes.

My stomach turns, and that reminds me.

“Have you seen—” I’m cut off as Enzo jumps to his feet, startling me before he grabs my arm and nearly drags me from my own chair.

“We need to move!” I don’t bother to ask why, though I get the feeling he won’t answer me.

Instead, I focus on keeping my feet under me as he pulls me through the dining room and then the kitchen and down a set of stairs I don’t remember seeing before.

I stumble on the last step and feel pain radiate from my ankle up my leg and let out a cry of pain.

“Keep up or I’ll leave you here,” Enzo hisses through his teeth as he yanks me back up, hardly pausing to let me get back up before he’s moving again.

We head down a dark hall with doors every few feet before he stops abruptly in front of one that appears to be random to me but must make sense to him.

“Don’t come out of here until I come back for you.” He shoves me into the room, and I quickly turn back to see him standing in the doorway.

“What? No, don’t leave me—” Enzo cuts me off, reaching out to grip my face in a punishing grip as my teeth cut into my cheeks. His face twists as he looks down at me, fury in his eyes.

Those eyes never loved me…

“If you come out, I’ll kill you.” His voice is low, but it’s impossible to miss the venom and the promise in his words, shining in his eyes.

He shoves me, and I stumble back, falling on my ass a second before the door clicks closed, leaving me in darkness, afraid and alone.

83 Days without Kat

I’ve always enjoyed research, knowing the how and the why, reading into things, and knowing everything.

Until now.

The time it takes to look into our uncle feels like time stolen, as Kat goes through… lord only knows.

Finding him isn’t enough, though, and I can’t say I’m surprised. Even if he is a piece of shit, he’s a Lawson. He’s made something of himself, even if that something is terrible; he’s also spent years hidden to the point that Father and Nathan thought him dead.

We had to do it right, though, because if we fucked up, we might have very well lost her forever, so despite wanting to rush in, we did as we were told.

We waited.

Even after we found out where he was hiding, we had more to do: we needed the layout of the house, a rough idea of who was inside, and to wait for the right time.

Jade and her guys tried to get in a few days ago, only to hit another snag.

Lorenzo wasn’t an idiot and had the best security his money could buy; thankfully, Spencer was smarter than anyone I’d ever met. It took him nearly a day to crack his many security walls, but he did it.

He’d taken over his security completely, his camera feeds playing right before my eyes, and I’d been unable to look away as the woman who stole my heart walked around her gilded cage.
