I guess it’s good to know he will love them no matter what.
“We'll have the results in about twenty-four hours, and so long as all goes well, you guys will be out of here by then too.” Dr. Sterling hands the baggies to a nurse, then moves up the bed toward Kat.
“And we wanted to try breastfeeding, right?” Kat looks at Nathan as if he somehow has the answer, but he shakes his head.
“That’s up to you and only you. None of us can do that for you.”
“He’s right. Fed is best, and while I always encourage you to at least try, there is also no shame in formula feeding.” Dr. Sterling is quick to agree, which seems to ease some of Kat’s concern.
“I think we’ll try. I’d like to. I’ve heard it helps bond and can help them develop a sleep schedule.”
Dr. Sterling moves to the head of the bed, arranging her pillows and helping her get comfortable, then helping her latch him properly, and I can’t look away.
Women’s bodies are amazing, to grow a whole perfect little human and be able to provide everything they need…
As if I needed another reason to love her more.
Her face scrunches up in concentration for a moment, and I see a hint of pain before it disappears and a beautiful smile pulls at her lips, and her eyes find mine.
Fuck, we can have as many kids as she wants.
Everything is perfect: Niccolò is healthy, and Kat is recovering. Nathan, Desmond, and I spent the night in the hospital with them despite her telling us a few hundred times to go home to Addison.
She has the others, plus Mamma and Papà, with her; she’s more than taken care of. It’s only for one night.
I sit in the rocking chair, looking out the dark window at the street below, in the city that never sleeps, and take a moment to enjoy this. All the shit got us here, to them, and I can’t imagine another way to be.
I would have endured so much more, so many things, if it meant I got her, this family, and life.
I still would, without a second thought.
Niccolò sleeps often, and I can’t help but marvel at him—so small but perfect. He’s hardly the size of my forearm, but he fits so perfectly; I could sit with him like this forever.
“If you hold him all the time, he won’t ever let us put him down.” Kat’s sleepy voice pulls me from my thoughts, and I look up to find her watching us. Her words are teasing, but the smile on her face is soft and so full of love it makes my heart squeeze.
She was made for this: to be a mother. I’ve never met someone who loves others so completely as she loves Addison and now Niccolò.
“Oh no, whatever will we do with a spoiled baby?” I cock a brow at her, and she chuckles.
“You're supposed to be resting,” I tell her, keeping my voice down so I don't wake Niccolò or the others.
Her forehead wrinkles just slightly, but it’s enough.
“Bad dream?”
She doesn’t answer, but she doesn’t need to. Not only do I know her, but I know what she’s going through, probably better than most.
I hold Niccolò close, standing to walk to her bed, and she scoots over to let me sit on the edge with our boy between us.
“He looks like you.” Her voice is quiet, but it’s impossible to hide the love that oozes from her.
“I’m just happy he has your eyes. Between you and Nate, I hope all the kids have more than just this shit brown.”
Her mouth drops open in shock, and she swats at my arm with a stern look.
“I love your eyes, thank you.”
Rolling my eyes, I lean in and press a kiss to those pursed lips. She’s so fucking cute when she’s angry, and it’s honestly not super easy to do, so I have to soak it in.
