What the hell do I say? That his sister has me lying in bed with her every night sharing pillow talk? That we have only kissed once, but every time I see her, I just barely resist the urge to do it again? That she has me lowering my walls and revealing shit to her that I haven’t even exactly come to terms with myself?
“You know, if something is going on between the two of you, I wouldn’t care. I mean, if anything, I would be inclined to warn you. My sister can be a handful.”
I laugh at that. It’s an understatement, and he knows it.
“Shouldn’t you be warning me to not hurt her?”
He smiles. “Nah, you already know that, but Evelyn can handle herself. Sure, I will step in if necessary, but I have a feeling she’d do more damage to you than I could before I could even get there.”
“Fair.” I sigh. “I don’t know what’s going on between us.”
Reaper lets me sit in the acknowledgment that there might be something between us.
“Well, not that I think that it matters, but you have my blessing if you decide to make a move. As far as I’m concerned, the both of you could do worse. Just make sure you go into it knowing exactly what you want and that it’s for real. I don’t want either of you to feel like you have to do something just because of the club and me.”
Before I can say anything, he stands, slapping me on the shoulder as he leaves.
I guess I have a choice to make.
To go after the girl or not.
Evelyn
I’d never admit it if asked, but things with Dansworth disturbed me. Every time Preston approaches telling me we have a patient, I flinch without meaning to.
And to think, Dansworth never even laid his hands on me. Which is why it’s crazy that I’m letting him have so much power over me, but I can’t help it. And to think, he did worse to Natalie and Melanie.
Even Marie has taken to approaching me carefully.
I let myself into the on-call room and sigh when it’s empty.
Thank God.
Walking over, I lie down on one of the beds and stare up at the ceiling. My feet are screaming from being on them so long, and it feels fucking amazing to elevate them.
I should take a bath when I get home.
Before my mind can wander too far, someone walks into the room.
“Okay, enough. You’ve been avoiding me.”
Travis flips the lock on the door before walking over to me. I scoot over, and he makes himself comfortable on the bed next to me as I turn onto my side.
“I haven’t been avoiding you,” I lie.
He rolls his eyes. “That’s bullshit, and you know it. I need you to tell me what’s going on.”
“I don’t even know where to start,” I mutter.
He reaches over and grabs my hand that’s lying between us and squeezes. “The beginning is usually a good start, but how about you start with why our friends keep coming in for superficial injuries we both know that they don’t need treated?”
I shake my head. “You know I can’t discuss club things.”
“You’re not. I don’t need details, but I need to know if you’re in trouble. If I need to keep my eyes open.”
Even though I know better, I let it all spill out.
“Well, you know why Hades was hanging around. To keep an eye on me and all. I know you two have been in contact, so I also know that you know he isn’t allowed on site anymore…”
