My smile falters for half a second, which is apparently all the satisfaction he needs because the corner of his mouth lifts.
Goddamn him.
I keep moving with him, but my attention drifts past his shoulder toward the booth, and just like that, the memory of Emma sitting beside him earlier creeps back into my head.
"I saw you and Emma together earlier."
Kentaro's eyes return fully to mine. "Okay."
"You looked good together."
His brows pull together. "What?"
I try to keep my voice light, even though the jealousy I've been trying to drink and dance away slips embarrassingly close to the surface. "You did. Sitting there together, you actually looked like a couple." My fingers toy absently with the hair at his nape. "Have you ever thought about asking her out?"
For a second, he only stares at me.
Then that tiny crease between his brows disappears, and the bastard's mouth slowly curves.
"Are you jealous, trouble?"
I immediately look away. "No."
"I think you are."
"I'm not."
His hands remain firmly around my waist, keeping me against him when I make the halfhearted mistake of trying to put another inch between us.
"I distinctly remember you telling me you don't have a jealous bone in your body."
"I don't."
"Could've fooled me." His voice drops beside my ear. "You're looking a little green right now."
I glare up at him, but there's no point pretending he hasn't gotten under my skin. Not when I'm apparently incapable of keeping anything from him anymore.
"Why would I be jealous?" I mumble. "It's not like we're actually anything."
The teasing disappears from his face.
Just like that.
His hands stop moving at my waist, and something about the way he looks at me makes me wish I could pull the words back.
"Of course we are."
My heart gives a strange little stumble.
"You're my girlfriend."
"Fake girlfriend," I remind him quietly.
Kentaro goes still for a moment before one hand leaves my waist and comes up to my face. His fingers settle along my jaw, gently turning me back when my eyes try to escape his.
"Fake or not, I don't treat you like you mean nothing to me."
That shuts me up.
