“So what happens now?”
“We’d like you to come to the station and provide a more detailed statement at the station.”
Oh, boy. This is really happening.
“Does this mean I get to see an actual interrogation room?” I ask. “Is it anything like me?”
Bronson closes his eyes as the other detective stares at me.
I suppose I shouldn’t have sounded so excited.
FOUR
BRONSON
There are approximately a thousand things I’d rather be doing right now than watching the woman I’m falling for walk into a police interrogation room.
Kissing her, for starters. Taking her somewhere nice for dinner. Finding out whether she tastes as sweet as she looks.
Hell, I’d even go back to that ridiculous escape room if it meant seeing her smile again.
Instead, I’m standing in the hallway outside Interview Room Three, trying to convince myself that I’m not about to do something incredibly stupid.
Like interrupt an active investigation because my date looks scared.
“You’re staring at the suspect.”
I turn toward my partner, Derek. “I’m observing.”
He snorts. “Right.”
My eyes narrow. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means I’ve known you for twelve years, and I’ve never seen you look at a woman like that.”
I glare at him.
He grins.
“She’s cute.”
“Watch it.”
His grin widens.
“Oh, you’re definitely fucked.”
Unfortunately, he’s not wrong. Rachel has been inside the interview room for approximately twenty minutes.
Not that I’m counting.
I’ve already given my statement, explained exactly what I witnessed when Vanessa let Rachel try on her ring, and reviewed the available security footage.
Unfortunately, the footage isn’t particularly helpful.
The camera clearly captures Rachel slipping the ring onto her finger.
Then Vanessa’s fiancé steps between her and the camera.
