Her cheeks turn pink. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

And because I can’t resist, I lean down and kiss her again. This time, considerably more deliberately.

Her fingers tighten against my shirt.

And for one spectacular moment, I forget we’re standing in the middle of a police station.

Until someone clears his throat. Loudly.

Derek.

Of course.

“Should I give you two a minute?”

Rachel practically jumps away from me.

Derek grins. “Congratulations on your release.”

She covers her face. “I’m never going to recover from this.”

I laugh. And suddenly, everything feels right again.

Unfortunately, it’s almost midnight. And neither of us has eaten.

Our dinner was interrupted before our entrées arrived, and judging by the way Rachel’s stomach growls while we’re walking toward the station’s exit, she’s approximately three minutes away from committing an actual crime.

“Was that your stomach?”

“No.”

I look at her.

She sighs. “Fine. Yes.”

“When did you last eat?”

“Define eat.”

“Rachel.”

“I had half a granola bar for lunch.” I scoff and she gets defensive. “I’m a busy woman.”

“You’re a menace.”

“That too.”

I stop walking. “Stay here.”

Her eyebrows rise.

“Am I being detained again?”

“Only if you try to escape.”

She grins.
