“Research.”
“Rachel.”
“What?”
“Please don’t tell me you’re investigating this woman.”
“I’m not investigating her.”
He gives me a look. “I’m investigating her Instagram.”
He sighs. “Of course you are.”
Here’s the thing about social media. And if there’s one thing I know better than random facts about random serial killers, it’s social media.
People lie. Constantly.
They lie about their relationships. Their finances. Their vacations. Their happiness.
And occasionally, they lie about their engagement rings.
But here’s what most people don’t realize. Even when they’re lying, they’re leaving behind evidence.
Photographs. Captions. Comments. Tags. And most importantly, timelines with receipts.
I scroll through Vanessa’s Instagram account.
Then her fiancé’s.
Then the accounts of approximately seventeen people who attended their party.
Bronson watches me. “You’re enjoying this.”
“You bet your ass I am.”
He shakes his head, but I catch the smirk of approval.
I stop scrolling.
“What is it?” Bronson asks, correctly reading the expression on my face.
“That’s interesting.”
“What’s interesting?” he asks.
I turn my phone toward him. “Look at this.”
It’s a photograph from Vanessa’s engagement party.
She’s standing beside her fiancé, holding up her enormous diamond ring.
He nods. “Okay.”
“Now look at this one.”
I swipe to another photograph.
Same party. Different angle. Different account.
