“Have you felt that fear outside of those nights, Dahlia?”

She swallows. “Yeah, a lot. When my mom died…”

A sharp pain takes hold of my chest.

I know the feeling, D.

“But recently…” she trails off, and instantly my skin itches.

“Dahlia,” I demand.

“This house. Sometimes it’s like the ghosts, the demons that haunt this house are waiting, watching. A million eyes freezing my blood. And it follows me. On campus, it’s much worse on campus. Constantly, there are eyes, so many eyes boring into me. And then,” she sighs.

“This class I am in. The assistant makes me feel so cold. Like I’m floating aimlessly in an icy river. But, now that you’re here, the heat of your eyes, your gaze watching over me keeps them at bay. Thank you.”

I don’t know what to say.

I haven’t seen anyone creeping around the Beckett house since I have been there. As for at school, I don’t know. I’ll need to tell Brahm and talk to Henry.

But it could just be because of all that she has been through.

“I’ve got you, little flower. Nothing will ever hurt you when I’m around. Do you understand?”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing.”

She smirks. “Not even if I ask nicely.”

My mouth opens, but nothing comes out. I—

This fucking girl. No. No. This fucking woman. This goddess on Earth. It was like she was placed here for me. For punishment, or reward. I haven’t figured it out yet.

“I have to go, Shadow. I enjoyed talking to you. Try not to hide from me anymore. But if you do,” and I take a deep breath, waiting. “At least let me know we’re playing that game. I like the audience.”

And the line goes dead.

And my heart pounds out of my chest.

And my head is a mess.

And all I can think is…she is perfect.

She is mine.

Grayson

Henry and Brahm always support my terrible decisions.

So, when I told them I needed not only Dahlia’s class schedule, but also to know the name of the assistants in those classes, they came through.

Of course, it was under the guise that I was just doing some minor follow ups with her safety, but in reality, I really wanna know what fucker has her too freaked out to go to school.

Surprisingly, finding this guy was sort of easy. Aside from her science class, where the assistant is a girl, the only other class with an assistant is Logan’s.

He was more than happy to see me when I waltzed into his office today.

“Grayson Williams, do my eyes deceive me? Caroline must have been right. I am going blind if I’m seeing you in here.”
