Kade closed the gap, burying his head in my chest. His arms wrapped around my waist, and I nearly toppled backwards from the force of it.

“Kade—” I was about to push him away when a cold voice cut through the room.

“Get your fucking hands off my wife.”

I jumped at Zane’s thinly disguised rage. Looking up, I saw his jaw was set, his eyes hard.

Slowly, Kade pulled away. He winked at me then stood, eyes dry.

What the fuck was he playing at?

“Brother, what’s up?”

“You’ll remember not to touch my wife again if you want to keep that pretty-boy smile, brother.”

“Easy, now. I was upset. She was just comforting me.”

Zane growled, actually fucking growled. It should have been shocking, but it was an oddly welcome sound. And hot as hell.

I stood, gripping my hands.

“What are you doing here, Kade?”

“I invited him over.”

Angry obsidian eyes pinned me to the floor. “Why?”

“Somebody’s in trouble,” Kade singsonged.

“Get the hell out,” Zane ordered.

“My pleasure. Hope I was able to help, Amira, my darling. I’ll leave you two to fight like an old married couple.”

Kade’s cavalier attitude was the complete opposite of the sorrowful man craving comfort only moments ago. Had the tears been all a front? Some cheap ploy to garner my sympathy? I didn’t know the man well enough to decide, but his behavior was strange to say the least.

As soon as he left the room, Zane demanded answers. “What the hell was that about?”

“First up, you can’t threaten him.”

“I can do whatever the hell I like. This is my house. You’re my wife. He was touching you and he’s not allowed to do that.”

I understood his anger. I could only imagine what it had been like to hear Chloe confess her love for his brother, for her to break his heart.

“I’m not Chloe.”

Zane stiffened. “Excuse me?”

He was looking at me in a way I’d never seen before. It wasn’t anger. No, it was—

Pain.

I could see it now. The tortured expression in his eyes. For the first time, Zane’s anguish was on display. And it was startling.

My head swam, and it took all my effort to remain upright. But I couldn’t go to him. I couldn’t comfort him. I could see that. He may be wounded, but he was still defensive.

“I said, I’m not Chloe. I had no idea who she was until I was blindsided at the store today. Kiki came in for an alternation, and she just so happened to tell me that you’d been engaged before.”

“So?”
