“Send the order.”
“And don’t agree with everything I say. That makes it worse.”
“You ever had that problem with me?”
“No,” she says, laughing. “You’ve been very dependable that way.”
She hangs up to join her meeting. I finish answering Cam, then send the gallery my confirmation for two.
Chapter 26
Giselle
Rae has sent another photograph of the rental house. This one is a kitchen with white cabinets and a window over the sink. Before I can enlarge it, a message appears beneath it.
That door goes to the backyard. Zion could let the dog out without going through the whole house.
We do not have a dog.
I show Jarrett, who is taking the last carton out of the delivery bag.
“Dog looks expensive,” he says.
“There isn’t a dog.”
“Yet.”
I put my phone down. “She hasn’t even had the interview.”
“That’s tomorrow?”
“At nine. She flew in this morning. Apparently, she had time to become a resident before checking into the hotel.”
He slides my dinner across the table. “You tell her you liked the house?”
“I haven’t decided whether I like it.”
“You looked at that kitchen longer than she probably did.”
“The cabinets look freshly painted. That can conceal things.”
“Like Charlotte being too far away?”
I take the carton he offers me. He ordered what I asked for, including the extra sauce, which makes it difficult to object to him being in my house telling the truth.
“I want her to have the opportunity,” I say.
“I believe you.”
“I would like the opportunity to be closer.”
“How close?”
“Forty-five minutes.”
“Traffic or no traffic?”
“You’re enjoying yourself.”
