The door slid closed behind Sam, and Jameera walked over to her dad’s bedside. A light knock sounded at the door before it opened.

“Hello again, Ms. Clayton. Your uncle just told me you were here, so I wanted to stop by with an update.”

She looked up at the doctor while her breathing slowed and her hands balled into fists. I stood and walked over to comfort her. Taking her hand in mine, I squeezed it tight to let her know I was there for her.

“Have you guys seen any improvement?” Jamera queried.

“No improvement. However, we are going to start reducing the sedation to help us get a clear picture. It will be a waiting game,” the doctor informed us with a faint smile.

“Okay,” Jameera nodded. “When are they going to start reducing the sedation?”

“We are about to take him down for more imaging so we can reassess the brain. Depending on what the team sees, we might start gradually reducing the sedation as soon as this evening.”

“Okay.”

“Any other questions?”

“No. Thank you for the update.”

“The transport team will be in shortly to take James down for the CT scan.”

“Okay.” Jameera nodded.

The doctor exited the hospital room, and Jameera walked over to her father’s hospital bed. My hand was still grasped tightly in hers, so I followed her footsteps. We hovered over James, and I scanned his face, then the machines that I couldn’t read. I hated that we were here.

“Daddy, you have to fight,” Jameera pleaded, grabbing his hand with her free hand. “I’m sure that you already saw that Q proposed, but I have so much more to catch you up on. I need to tell you about my night in jail. You need to see the scar on my face so you can threaten to sue the city about your daughter.”

Jameera smiled for the first time since she saw me come out of that room in the courthouse.

“I need you to send me flowers on the day Moon & Muse’s spring collection drops, like you have done every other year. You need to walk me down the aisle and give me away to Q on our wedding day.” Jameera sniffled, and I wrapped my arm around her, gently caressing her shoulder.

“You have to be able to control Uncle Sam during my wedding reception because you know he acts a fool once he has too much to drink,” Jameera snickered.

“Plus,” Jameera paused and took a deep breath.

Her eyes left her father, and she peered up at me for a moment. I felt a tremor pass through my hand, and Jameera lifted it to plant a gentle kiss on my knuckle. I’d probably feel a twinge of guilt every time she did that for the rest of our lives. That little act alone should’ve told me she’d never do no shit like pillow talk with another man about my imperfections. Jameera turned back to her father, and I pulled her into my arms and lifted her up.

“James is going to pull through. We have to think positive,” I affirmed. Jameera melted into my chest, her hair brushing up against my face.

“Yes, Daddy, you still have so much life to live. I still need you for so much,” Jameera announced.

The door swung open, and we stepped aside to let them do their thing. I knew James would pull through; he had to. He couldn’t leave us like that.

CHAPTER FIVE

Khaleesi

Amid the chaos, everyone riding with us missed Xain holding my hand as we exited the courthouse. I wasn’t sure how I felt about everyone knowing our business, so I was happy for the distraction. After Xain helped me into the truck last, he took the front seat and jumped straight into work mode. Tech and Vez did right getting out of the courthouse before the mayhem started. Mama Marissa and Yaseer were dropped off first so they could get back to Yarissa, and Amill stayed with them.

When Duke pulled into the parking spot, he placed the truck in park and reached for his door handle, but Xain stopped him.

“I got it. I’mma walk her up,” he informed Duke as he pulled his door open.

Duke tilted his head to the side, and his bushy brows knitted together. “Wait… Xain… Uhhhh…” He stuttered before Xain turned around to face him. “After what happened in Miami, I was given strict instructions not to leave you alone with her.”

“By who?” Xain pried.

“The direction came from Q, and honestly, I don’t think it’s a good idea either. I’ll help Khaleesi up with her luggage.”
