“You’ll tell me eventually,” Roman promised in a threatening tone.

Beth snorted and leaned back against him.

He kissed the top of her head and closed his eyes as he took in her scent. He needed her like he needed his next breath.

Finally, the kids were done. The family rounded them up while Mike and Tom took care of the horses.

Roman’s phone went off. He took several steps away to answer it.

“Okay, I’ll be right there.”

He came back to the group. “We have to go. I was called in for something.”

“I can help get the family home,” Beth said.

“Are you sure?”

“Of course.”

He kissed her hard on the lips and then his mom’s cheek.

“I’ll call you.”

Beth waved and turned back to his family and started helping the other adults get them in the vehicles for the ride home.

Chapter Nineteen

Later that night, Roman stood outside Beth’s house and rang the bell. He knew it was late, but he had to see her. To be able to hold her in his arms. Only Beth would be able to get the picture of the young girl’s dead body out of his head.

He heard her on the other side of the door.

“Who is it?” she asked.

“Me, baby.”

She quickly opened the door. “Is everything okay?” she asked worriedly.

“No, it’s fine. I know it’s late, and I’m sorry...”

“Don’t be. If you need me, it doesn’t matter what time it is.”

His heart felt like it was going to burst from his chest. He stepped in, turned back after locking the door. He studied her expression for a moment.

“Are you averse to the thought of me getting you naked, making you feel good while I make you mine?” he asked.

“Oh, well...” she stuttered and tightened the belt on her robe.

“Where’s Jayden?” he asked.

“At a birthday party.”

Roman tipped his head to the side. “I’m assuming all night since it’s already late.”

“Yes.”

His eyes raked over her and caught sight of her feet encased in old bunny slippers. They might have been fluffy at one point but now were a flat gray and the ears flopped every time she moved. He smiled for the first time that night.

“Shit. That sealed it.”
