“Probably. I kinda like it. Felix always comes up with the best nicknames.”

Nothing but a grunt of dissatisfaction fell from his lips at that. “Were you paying attention during introductions?”

“You mean with all the people you’ve been talking to? Yes. It’s unfortunately all seared into my mind.”

He nodded. Inara got the feeling he was somewhat pleased at that, but she couldn’t be sure. “Lord Howling and Lady Armanie are the representatives from the neighbouring kingdoms we will be conducting our meeting with shortly. What are your impressions of them?”

“Lord Howling is a charmer. Likes to talk a lot but also hardly says anything at the same time. Like he uses words to disarm and fool people into thinking he’s nice and approachable. But really, he’s a snake disguised in sheep’s clothing.”

Prince Walder’s eyebrows raised slightly in surprise. Inara took that as a good sign and continued.

“Lady Armanie is exactly as she portrays herself to be. Strong. Powerful. No bullshit attitude. Tells it like it is. I get the sense she’s honourable, but I’ve been wrong about that before, so don’t take my word on that.”

“Bad past experience?” he asked, his gaze sweeping the room.

“You could say that.”

“Hmm.” The prince tapped his finger twice on the armrest of his throne chair in thought but didn’t share with her what he was thinking. “Your assessments are accurate. I will admit, I’m quite surprised you were able to deduce that Lord Howling is not what he seems. Most fall victim to his handsome looks and charm.”

Inara couldn’t help but snort. “Please. Have you seen my best friend? That motherfucker is just about the most beautiful man in existence and is as sly as they come. I know better than to trust a pretty face.”

His brows creased into a deep frown.

“You’re doing that a lot.”

“Doing what?” he asked, confused.

“Frowning. More so than usual anyway. Don’t tell me you’re nervous about this mysterious meeting you have with Lord Howling and Lady Armanie?”

“I don’t get nervous.” It was as if the mere idea of it offended him.

“Then what’s with the frown?”

He looked at her, violet eyes flashing. Her heart stopped. Whatever passed between them vanished in an instant. “Your presence irritates me.” He grunted out eventually, causing Inara to roll her eyes.

“And with that, I think I’m going to depart to get a drink. I’m parched. Want one?”

He shook his head.

“You’ll be alright up here without me?”

“Oh, I wonder how I could possibly survive a few minutes on my own.” Every word dripped with sarcasm, and Inara arched an eyebrow.

“You know, it’s funny, I don’t remember you using so much sarcasm before.”

“What can I say, you’re rubbing off on me.” He inclined his head. “Go.”

She needed no further incentive.

With hurried steps, she rushed down the dais and over to one of the serving tables against the wall, weaving in and out of people as she went. When she neared the table, she noticed Balthus, hands clasped behind his back, inspecting the table.

“Can’t decide what to have?” she asked, sliding up to him.

“There are far too many choices to make such a decision so lightly.” He threw her that sly smile. “You didn’t tell me you were personal Shielder to the Crowned Prince.”

“What, you mean in the thirty-second conversation we had?” She picked up a champagne glass, taking a sip. The taste wasn’t to her forte, but she was thirsty, so she would have taken anything at that point. “It’s hard to fit my entire life story into such little time.”

He chuckled. “A prestige like that…Most people would find any excuse to drop that into the conversation. It’s a highly coveted position. Tasked with keeping Arelia’s Heir safe? You’re one of the most important people in the room.”
