Richard is still standing there.
Watching.
Caleb’s expression hardens.
When he speaks, his voice is quiet enough that I feel it more than hear it.
“Because he put his hands on you.”
“I could handle him.”
“I know.”
“Then stop acting like I need you to rescue me.”
“I didn’t rescue you.”
“No?”
“No.”
His gaze settles on my face again. “I warned him.”
My pulse skips. “You didn’t say a word to him.”
“Didn’t need to.”
I should step away.
I don’t.
“You’re unbelievably arrogant.”
“So you keep telling me.”
“And bossy.”
“Yep.”
“Infuriating.”
His eyes darken. “You done?”
“Not remotely.”
“Good.”
“Why is that good?”
He leans closer, his mouth near my ear. “Because you’re sexy when you’re pissed off.”
Every coherent thought leaves my head.
He straightens before I can answer.
Then he looks directly at Richard.
The room falls silent again.
