My Husband Betrayed Me at the Altar for My Twin Sister

“Much. Just needed to lie down for a bit.” I bet. She rubbed her belly again. Performance art at its finest. “I can’t find Joel anywhere. Have you seen him?”

“He’s at the bar, I think.”

“Of course he is.” She laughed, the sound identical to mine but somehow faker. “Men, right?”

“Right.”

We stood there, twin sisters who shared a face and apparently a husband. She didn’t know I knew, and the urge to grab her by her perfect hair and drag her across the dance floor was overwhelming. But that would be messy. Exactly what everyone would expect from the woman who just discovered her husband’s affair.

I had something better planned. Something that didn’t involve my fists.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the DJ’s voice boomed through the speakers. “It’s time for the toasts!”

The crowd gathered around as Matt, Garrett’s best man, took the microphone. He was already drunk, swaying slightly as he launched into a story about their college days. Something about a frat party and a fire extinguisher. Everyone laughed at the right moments.

Garrett stood beside me, his hand on my back. Every few seconds, his fingers would twitch and he would shift uncomfortably. The fiberglass was really doing its job. I wondered how long before he excused himself to the bathroom. How long before he realized scratching only made it worse.

“…and when I saw him look at Sam that first time,” Matt was saying, “I knew he was done for. This guy who swore he’d never settle down, completely whipped by the girl who laughed at his coffee-stained shirt.”

More laughter. Garrett’s hand tightened on my back, then immediately loosened. Even that small movement must have been agony.

“To Garrett and Sam,” Matt raised his glass. “May your love story be everything you deserve.”

Oh, Matt. If only you knew.

Everyone drank. Then Sophie took the microphone, and I had to physically stop myself from lunging at her and sending my plan to shit.

“Hi everyone,” she said, her voice catching with fake emotion. “For those who don’t know me, I’m Sophie. Sam’s twin sister, best friend, and maid of honor.”

She paused for effect, one hand on her belly. Always reminding everyone. Look at me, growing life while I fuck my sister’s husband.

Fuck her.

“Sam and I have shared everything since before we were born,” Sophie continued. “Clothes, secrets, dreams. And now I get to share in her happiness as she starts this new chapter with Garrett.”

The irony was choking me.

“Sam deserves the best,” Sophie’s voice broke. Actual tears rolled down her cheeks. “She deserves someone who sees how special she is. Someone who chooses her every single day. Someone who knows what a treasure they have.”

I watched Garrett shift uncomfortably and not from the fiberglass this time. From the words. From guilt, maybe. If he was even capable of feeling that.

“To my sister,” Sophie raised her glass, tears streaming down her face. “May you have everything you’ve ever wanted.”

The room erupted in applause. People were crying. My own mother was crying, and even Garrett’s stone-faced parents looked moved.

And I stood there thinking about how Sophie’s toast was actually a confession. She thought I deserved the best, so she took him. She wanted me to have everything I wanted, except the faithful husband part.

The DJ reached for the microphone, but I got there first.

“Actually,” I said, my voice carrying through the speakers. “I’d like to say a few words too.”

This wasn’t planned. Brides didn’t usually give toasts at their own weddings, but nothing about this day was going according to plan anyway.

“Of course!” The DJ handed over the mic. “Everyone, let’s hear from the beautiful bride!”

The room quieted. Two hundred faces turned to me, smiling and expectant. Garrett looked confused. Sophie looked nervous.

They should have looked terrified.
