Runaway for the Grumpy Daddy

Page 83

by Lucky Moon

Not Boone's fragile little thing.

Not Derek's runaway.

The veterinary presence.

Needed.

The word went through me deeper than safe.

Safe was precious. Safe was the cabin fire, Boone's chest under my cheek, Biscuit facing the door. Safe was a thing I had wanted so badly I once believed wanting it made me weak.

Needed was different.

Needed had boots on.

Needed knew dosages.

Needed could pull a calf in the dark and decide whether a cow needed calcium by the look in her eye. Needed could work eighteen hours, sleep forty minutes on an office cot, wake at the first wrong note in a heifer's bawl.

Needed did not mean I owed my body to anybody.

It meant my presence changed outcomes.

A calf lived because I was there.

A heifer stood because I noticed her going down.

The ranch got through because my hands joined the others.

I had gone to Bozeman to make Derek stop.

I was going back because the work would not.

The distinction settled into me like a gate dropping into its latch.

I was not driving toward Boone to be rescued.

He could not rescue me. He was behind bars, and I had already left the apartment under my own power.

I was not driving back to be forgiven.

He might be furious. Wyatt would be. Cash already was. I had broken my word, frightened all of them, taken my truck into a storm after every man in the county with sense had started tying down what he loved.

Their anger could exist.

So could my return.

I was not cargo.

The phrase came back in Boone's voice first.

You're not cargo. Say it.

"I'm not cargo."

Snow hammered the windshield. The wipers lost ground for three strokes, caught up, lost it again.

"I'm not cargo."
