Whisper

“Get in the van, Blush.”

“No. My car can’t be here.”

He’s right. I nod. “Meet me at the drugstore on Twentieth and Spelling.”

“Are you gonna call the cops?”

I give him a hard look. “Of course not, but we need to talk.”

He nods, scurrying past me to his car. I glance at the dead man then disappear into the darkness as well. At least there’s no one else around to have witnessed it. Not as far as I can tell.

I hop in the van and head to my destination, quickly catching up to Blush. Ten minutes later, we arrive at the drugstore, and when he gets out of the car, he’s discarded the hoodie and gloves.

He walks over to the driver’s side. “I can explain.”

“I sure hope so. Get in.”

He nods and walks around to the passenger side. Once he’s in the car beside me, he wrings his hands together, but he doesn’t say a word. I guess it’s on me.

“I just saw you put a bullet in someone’s head.”

He nods but still won’t look at me.

“Blush?”

“He was a predator, okay?” He turns towards me, his face creased with anger. “I did research on him. It started at Segreto. He threatened sexual violence to one of our dancers.”

“Robert Pitt?”

His brow creased. “How do you know that?”

“Riley told me when I was at the club earlier.”

“Why?”

“I asked how things were going. It was just an update.”

Blush nods. “He gave me the creeps, you know? So I did some research and he’s a youth pastor. This is his fourth church in two years. Guess why he left the other ones?”

“Was he molesting kids?”

“I don’t have proof, but there are allegations, and instead of turning the bastard in, he just got moved along to another church with a fresh batch of victims.”

“Jesus.”

“He’s been arrested for assault before too. He got rough with a date, held her down. He did a few months for it. Long time ago, but…” Blush shakes his head. “If you do it once, you’ll do it again.”

“You’ve done this before.”

He exhales slowly, nodding. “Yes.”

“Middle-aged men, predators. You always leave them out in the open.”

“Yes.” He tilts his head back, swallowing hard. “But I’m not sorry. They deserve to die. They’ve hurt people.”

Well, fuck. I just found my serial killer.
