The Pulse Within Her

I can still picture her reading her book this morning, the faint crease in her brow as she concentrated on the words. The way her lips moved slightly, as if she were tasting each sentence. It’s maddening how much I notice about her without even meaning to.

That’s why I allow Siena to drag me through the house, letting her lead me to wherever she pleases. We don’t even stop to close the door.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

SUMNER

Taped to the door, like a freaking eviction notice, is a note from my oh-so-pleasant host. The two little words staring back at me have me considering hightailing it to literally any other place. Based on the shortness and simplicity of his request, he’s either mad about something, or thinks it’s been too long since he sank his disgusting teeth into me.

I’m hoping it’s the former.

Ripping the demand of “My House” from my door, I crumble it into a wad and shove it in my pocket. The thought to pretend I never saw it crosses my mind. It’s not like he doesn’t know exactly where to find me though. Better to just get whatever it is out of the way.

“You summoned me?” I ask aloud, my voice mocking as I step up to the already open entryway. There’s no answer, so I let myself in, not seeing him in the kitchen or living room.

My feet carry me down the hallway, finding the door to his bedroom cracked. I push it open, ready to make some witty remark on how easy it was to break into a vampire’s house, but when I step through the threshold, all comments catch in my throat.

Rhenn is here alright, but he isn’t alone. I see him—them—only a moment before he looks up and sees me too. He shifts, caught off guard, and I turn toward the exit.

It slams shut in front of me.

What the hell? I whip my head around. Siena has her arm out, palm open to the door. She remains busy with what she’s doing, not breaking away to look at me or even attempting to cover up what’s going on.

I reach for the handle, squeezing the brass in my hand. It doesn’t budge.

A soft curse fills the air around me, low and unintentional. Rhenn breathes out—a sign he’s enjoying what she’s doing—and I find myself glancing to the round mirror on his wall. My view is of him. Black shirt, dark, messy hair, but in that way that looks purposeful. His focus is on her, until it isn’t. Silver eyes catch mine in the mirror, their shade noticeably darkening the moment they connect with mine.

He’s breathing heavily, letting his gaze fall over me. The room feels warmer than it should, and I can’t seem to remember why I’d even come over here. He’s seated upright, head tilted back so it’s against the wall, thundery irises absorbing our reflection as if he were committing the sight to memory.

The way his jaw tightens, the way his hair falls into his face… My eyes travel lower, seeing the way he moves into her, one hand gripping the bedding, the other buried in a sea of blue curls as she goes down on him.

Rhenn’s attention narrows to my own hand which glides over my midriff. Their sounds are far too audible with me so close. Whimpers. Groans.

I move my hand lower, squeezing my thighs together when his mouth parts, so focused on my every movement.

Siena moans against him, bobbing her head like a girl on a mission.

Her mission.

That I shouldn’t be any part of.

I wiggle the doorknob again. This time it opens and I shove through, closing it when I get to the other side and letting out a shaky exhale.

That was the reason he wanted me to come over? To see little miss attitude slurping on his… Ugh. And why was he looking at me like that?

Doesn’t matter now because I’m out of there and am going to work on burning it from my memory.

Finding a water bottle in the fridge, I pull it out, taking several large gulps. I’ve drank half of it when they exit the room. Rhenn’s face holds no expression, as per usual. Siena latches onto his arm. Her lipstick is smeared. She wears it like a trophy, proud.

I don’t let seeing them faze me. It’s not my fault they don’t know how to work a lock.

“Enjoy the show, creep?” Siena asks, holding her head high as though she’s just won something.

First of all, gross. Second, ew. And third, she’s the one who closed me in the room with them.

“Barfing wasn’t on my list of things to do today.” I cap my water bottle, setting it on the counter. “You forgot to mention that as one of your little gifts.”

She wrinkles her brows, huffing an irritated breath, then turns to Rhenn. “See you tonight, baby.” Her finger hooks on the collar of his shirt, dragging it down. “Then we can do that again.”
