"I didn’t want to discuss it over text."
"I know. I’m sorry I didn’t call yesterday. I got busy."
"Did Wolfgang give you the tickets?"
"Yes."
"And that was his jersey?"
"Yes, Mom."
She pauses before asking the question I’ve been waiting for.
"Are you seeing him?"
I look down at my lap. There’s a little frosting on the cuff of my sweatshirt, and I rub at it with my thumb.
"Yes."
"Oh, Baylor."
It’s quiet. Concerned.
Somehow, I would’ve preferred yelling.
"For how long?" she asks.
"Not long. We’ve been spending time together since I started using his kitchen, but dating is new."
"Does Beau know?"
"No."
"Sweetheart, he would be furious."
"I know."
"He’s coming to Seattle next week. He’s going to see you, and he’s going to play against Wolfgang. Have you thought about that?"
I’ve thought about little else whenever I’m not with Wolf.
"Yes."
"Beau is still in physical therapy. He called me after his appointment the other day because his knee was bothering him again."
"I know he’s still in PT, Mom. We talk."
"I’m not saying you don’t. But just because he’s playing now doesn’t mean everything that happened is behind him."
"I haven’t forgotten what happened."
"I know you haven’t."
"Then please don’t talk to me like I need reminding."
She goes quiet, and I close my eyes.
"Sorry. I didn’t mean to snap."
