"Two hundred."
"Megan."
"I know. But if anyone can do it, it’s you."
Flattery. Very effective, unfortunately.
"What time?"
"Seven. They can collect everything at six."
I open the fridge and check the frosting bases I prepped this morning. I have enough for my regular orders. Another two hundred people means more supplies, more batches, and a lot of decorating before tomorrow evening.
"I could offer three flavors with a simple swirl," I tell her. "Nothing elaborate on that notice. And there’d be a rush charge."
"That’s fine. Her fiancé can afford it."
I look at tomorrow’s order list. The café route, a birthday pickup, Serendipity’s counter, and the truck stock. I can get the baking done with two ovens. Frosting and packing everything on time is another matter.
But the extra profit would help with the shop, and two hundred people would get to try my cupcakes. I’ve had half that many referrals from Megan alone. Turning down her friend’s party because I might have to ask someone for help seems like a stupid business decision.
"Send me her email and the party colors. I’ll send her a quote."
"You’re a lifesaver, Baylor!"
"I’m happy I can help."
"Thank you. I told her your cupcakes were better anyway."
"Have you tried the other caterer’s?"
"No. Why would I?"
I laugh. "I’ll get that quote to her as soon as these trays are out."
When we hang up, I pull tomorrow’s order list closer and start counting batches. More butter, more boxes, and someone who can use a piping bag. Preferably someone who won’t charge me more than I’m making.
I text Ellie first.
Me: How busy are you tomorrow? I just agreed to an engagement party for two hundred.
Then I open Wolf’s messages. He’s getting ready for a game out of town, so he probably won’t see this until afterward.
Me: Your ovens are about to earn their keep. I picked up another order. Two hundred people. Tomorrow.
Ellie answers first.
Ellie: Please tell me you meant next Saturday.
Me: I wish.
Ellie: Let me see what I can move around. And eat something before you pass out. I’m sure you skipped breakfast again.
The oven timer goes off, and I put down my phone to get the trays. Between this order and the gala, I’m getting closer to the shop deposit. Then there’s the display case, a new mixer, and everything else I’ll need for the commercial kitchen. My list isn’t getting any shorter, but at least I’m finally making enough to cross something off.
I just need the space to stay available long enough to put my name on the lease.
And a few hundred cupcakes made by tomorrow and frosted the next day.
