Come Back To Me

My phone beeped, my screen lighting up with a text from Aiden.

Where are you?

I typed back…

Just dropped K off at your Dad’s place. I’m on my way.

Those bubbles popped up and I waited for his reply before I started my car again.

Callie left.

Fuck.

I thought about texting her, but decided against it. I needed to apologize in person for being an ass, for running out on her. And maybe for leading her on. Because that’s kind of what I did, even if my intentions were noble. She deserved more than my excuses.

Ready to leave, and go find Callie, I started the car but the sound of a front door slamming shut made me stop. I looked out of the passenger side window and saw Kenzi barreling back towards my car. What the hell?

She clambered into the car frantically, her face red and wet. “Drive!”

“Kenzi, what’s happened?”

Coach Davis came outside, and Kenzi glanced at him before looking back at me, pleading. “Please, just drive. I need Aiden, now!”

Shit a brick.

This day was going to a ball of shit faster than I could get a handle on it.

I turned into the road, and started back towards my house. I didn’t let Aiden know Kenzi was coming back with me, but the moment I stopped alongside the curb in front of my house, Kenzi was out the car, and throwing herself at a rather surprised Aiden as soon he stepped foot out of the front door. Her sobs filled the air, and Aiden tried to calm her down while frowning at me over her head. He engulfed her in his arms and the urge to replace them with mine was stifling. Staci helped Aiden usher Kenzi inside while my feet stayed rooted to the ground.

After a few beats, and a few more internal arguments with my subconscious, I got back behind the wheel of my car, headed for Callie’s apartment.
