She reads the note, then examines the envelope and photograph. “Do you recognize the woman?”

“Mom does. She remembers seeing her at Haven House, although she can’t recall a name.”

Emma picks up the image from the second parcel and places the photographs beside each other. She studies the women standing near Celeste, comparing the shape of their faces, the line of their brows, and the auburn hair.

“You think they’re the same person.”

“I think they’re the same woman.”

She turns to the entries containing Nora Bell’s name.

Met through Haven House.

Apartment approved.

Ask Michael about scholarship.

Doing much better.

Nora finally safe.

Emma reads through the pages, then compares the dates with the photographs. “Celeste followed her progress beyond the shelter,” she says. “There’s housing, legal support, and a scholarship reference.”

I begin writing the organization names on a legal pad while Emma moves through the notebook.

Haven House.

Brightway Housing.

The Archer Women’s Legal Project.

The New Horizons Scholarship Fund.

Those same organizations appear beside several other names, which changes the pattern from scattered acts of assistance into a connected system.

Emma traces the dates with her finger. “She kept track of everything. Housing, legal help, scholarships. Even after they left Haven House, she knew what happened next.”

I begin writing the organization names on a legal pad as Emma moves through the notebook. One woman receives legal help, another secures an apartment, and someone else completes training before beginning a new job.

Celeste kept track of each step because reaching safety meant little without the means to remain there.

Emma taps the scholarship entry. “Who’s Michael?”

“I don’t know, but Theo can search the charity records.”

“We can check the public files before my meeting.”

“You have fifteen minutes.”

Her hand remains on the page as she looks at me. “Do you want me to leave it alone?”

I’ve spent most of my life managing problems without involving anyone I couldn’t protect. Theo receives the information required to run the company, Mom waits until I’m ready to speak, and everyone else remains outside whatever boundary I decide is safest.

Emma never forces her way through those boundaries. She stays near them until keeping her out requires more effort than letting her remain.

“I want your help.”

“Then let me give it.”
