He kissed her. “I do have one little problem I wanted to talk to you about.”
“What?”
“You still owe me a back massage and a foot rub.”
“Our bet. I didn’t forget. It was so late when you came to say goodnight.”
“It’s not late now.”
“You’re right. I have plenty of time to pay up.”
Chapter thirty-one
“The best sound in the world.”
The living room was empty when Milo got home Monday. He checked the kitchen and then Wilda’s bedroom. The door was open, and the room was empty. He returned to the living room and stood at the bottom of the stairs.
“Wilda?”
“We’re up here!”
He jogged up the steps and walked down the hallway toward his room. The door to the room next to his was open, and he stopped at the doorway.
Wilda and Caleb sat on a plaid wool blanket in the middle of the otherwise empty room with a wicker picnic basket. The big window on the outside wall was open, and the temporary curtain Wilda had hung in front of it fluttered in the breeze.
“What’s all this?”
Wilda patted the blanket. “Come sit.”
Milo went to the blanket and sat down between Wilda and Caleb. “Are we having a picnic?”
Caleb nodded. “In my new room.”
“Oh, okay.”
“This is my room now.”
“You get your own room?”
“Yeah. Cause I’m big.”
“You certainly are.” Milo looked at Wilda, and she shrugged.
“He’s had quite a lot to say since he got home from school. Like non-stop.”
Caleb patted Milo’s knee. “I asked Mom.”
“You asked her…what?”
“If you can be my dad.”
“Oh.” Milo turned to Wilda. “Really? What did she say?”
“She says yes.”
“Good.”
“I’m going to call you Dad now. But not at school. At school, I need to call you Mr. Milo cause the other kids might get jealous.”
