“Never got my degree. Got married and had Caleb instead.”

“Right.”

“I always planned to go back, but…” She shrugged. “My priorities have changed.”

“What, ah. How did your job interview go?”

“They’ll probably hire me.”

“You don’t sound all that excited about it.”

She returned to the turret windows. “I’m not. Waiting tables isn’t really my dream job.”

“There are no waiting jobs in Bridgeport?”

“No one is hiring.”

“Hmm. What is your dream job?”

“I don’t know. Right now, it’s just a way to get me out of the house and contribute a little bit. Matty has been supporting us for too long.”

“I don’t think he minds.”

“He doesn’t. But still.”

“Right. I understand. I don’t suppose…”

“What?”

“I have a grant that will be renewed each year as long as I make progress in restoring the house. The funds must be used specifically for supplies and labor. Would you be interested in working on the house? You seemed to understand what it could become someday.”

“Like painting and such?”

“Yeah. Sanding, staining, cleaning. Lots of cleaning.”

“Um…I’d love that. Are you sure you can afford it?”

“It’s money from the grant. It will certainly cover a few bucks over minimum wage. You could just work while Caleb is in school. Every day. A few days a week. Whatever you want.”

“Well, I’m not afraid of cleaning. I actually am sort of obsessive about it. If you’re serious, I’d love to work on the house for you. With you. Whatever.”

Milo grinned. “Awesome.”

She put her hands to her face for a moment. “Once more, I find myself wanting to hug you, Milo.”

Mathias’ voice came from the bottom of the stairs. “Where are you guys at?”

“And that would be my brother.” She headed for the door. “We’re upstairs. Coming down.”

Milo followed her down the stairs to Mathias, who was holding a large insulated water bottle. “I was hoping to get some ice and water to refill this.”

Milo nodded. “Of course.”

Wilda gave her hug to Mathias. “Guess what?”

“What?” He stepped back from her.

“I’m going to be working here on the house.”
