“I’ll bring you lunch every day next week.”
“I think this deserves two weeks of lunches.”
“Done.”
“I’ll see you soon.”
The rain was still coming down, making the drive to town in the dark hazardous. When Milo parked in the driveway behind Rachel’s car, she opened the front door. He ran to the house and stepped inside.
Rachel hugged him. “Thank you.”
“Thank me when it’s dead.” He headed for the bedroom, with Rachel right behind him. He passed through the room, then opened the bathroom door. There was no spider in the bathtub. He turned to her, and she backed out of the room.
“Oh my gosh, where is it?”
“Rachel, I swear.”
“It’s loose in the house.” She left the bedroom and stood in the hallway. “You need to find it.”
Milo searched the bathroom thoroughly, then went into the bedroom. “It probably went down the drain.”
“What if it didn’t?”
“I’ll check the bedroom.” Finding something as small as a spider in her bedroom was an impossible task, but Milo did his best and found no spiders. He joined her in the hallway. “The spider dude is gone.”
“Nope.”
“Rachel. I looked everywhere.”
“I’m getting a motel.”
“Don’t be…” He sighed. “What do you think the spider will do to you?”
“Crawl on me. Bite me. Encase me in a giant web.”
“I can’t believe the sight of a spider can turn you into such a…child.”
She shoved him. “I’m terrified of them. Don’t make fun of me.”
“I’m not.”
“I’m sorry I woke you, and you drove all the way here. You can go.”
“Are you really going to get a motel room?”
“Yes.”
“No, you’re not. You’re coming home with me.”
“Really?”
“Yes. As ridiculous as that is, you staying in a motel is even more ridiculous.”
She hugged him. “Thank you. You’re my hero.”
“Hmm. Get your things.”
Ten minutes later, Rachel was following Milo back to his house. When they got inside, she hugged him again. “You’re the best.”
