Sullivan unlocked the doors to the cells. “I agree with Kahn.” (Which was honestly terrifying.) “I’ve met Isaacs and he’s bad news. Chason threw a car at him once.”

“Well, that’s Chason’s issue, not Isaacs’.” Randa marched out of the cell and towards the lobby of the police station. “Besides, I make him dinner every Sunday. It’s tradition.”

“I don’t like this tradition!” Kahn stormed after her, with the other Light Phases tagging along.

“I can’t come to dinner tonight.” Tallulah Jayne flounced beside Rysimer, the bow flopping around in her hair. “I have this emergency yoga appointment. But Dr. Ashley’s my therapist! So, I’m sure she’d be okay with you and me crashing her date with that complain-y guy.” She pointed towards Julius. “That’ll work, right?”

“It’s not ethical to double date with your psychologist.” Sullivan informed her. “It’ll blur professional lines.”

“So, I’ll fire her. Whatever.” Tallulah Jayne beamed up at Rye, dimples cutting into her cheeks. “Take me someplace expensive, okay? I’m totally worth it. And make sure you bring me flowers, but don’t let Julius bring any for her. I want to be the special one.”

Rysimer’s typically brooding face lit with a wide smile, like Tallulah Jayne’s spiteful demands were just the cutest thing ever. “Of course, I will shower you with gifts. You’re a queen. …Although, flowers are not an ideal choice for our courting rituals. The local human florist is being frequented by a sociopath.”

“Okay. Jewelry, then. Even better.”

“Randa!” Kahn shouted. “You cannot just ignore me.”

“Obviously I can, because I am.” Randa stopped to collect her purse from her desk, in the large room that served as the police station lobby and offices.

“Even someone as dim as the human knows this is a bad idea.” Kahn swept a hand towards Sullivan.

Sullivan sat down at his own desk. “I heard you punched out somebody’s teeth last night, Kahn. It’d sure be a shame if I tracked that Ben guy down and persuaded him to testify against you in court. Probably be hard to win your girl if you were behind bars.” His gaze cut meaningfully towards Randa. “Alone.”

Kahn’s mouth thinned, but he didn’t push it. The Light Phase must really have it bad, because he always pushed it.

“Ben Foster?” Tallulah Jayne flipped her hair. “I know him.”

Rysimer wasn’t thrilled with that news. “You do?”

“Sure. Blond? Dresses like he gets off watching his fourth wife have sex with pool boys? Owns a boat?” She cocked her head. “What do you want him for?”

Rye flashed Kahn a quick look. “We may have to kill him.”

Kahn grunted in agreement.

“Oh.” Tallulah Jayne shrugged. “Well, if you do, can I have the boat?”

“Of course.”

“Can we paint it pink?”

“No one’s killing Ben!” Randa said angrily. The girl showed a lot more emotions around the Light Phases. “Why in the world would we kill Ben?”

“Because we don’t like him?” Daven guessed. “Whoever he is.”

“This man’s testimony could get Kahn imprisoned by the humans.” Rye pointed out to Randa, like it was obvious and had nothing at all to do with Ben knowing Tallulah Jayne. “Sullivan just said so. Ben should be punished for that affront.”

“Kahn hit him for no reason!”

“He was drooling all over you.” Kahn reminded Randa, looking pissed off at the memory. “That’s a fucking good reason, in my book. For all you know, he could be your stalker!”

Sullivan sat straight up. “Hang on. What stalker?”

“Nothing.” Randa looped her purse over her shoulder, avoiding his eyes.

“What goddamn stalker, Randa?”

She sighed. “Someone’s been sending me weird flower bouquets, alright? The Light Phases are helping me look into it, though. It’s all handled.”
