So, I drove to Corwin that morning with a bite mark under my collar and a plan. A plan that sounded simple enough yet was anything but. The plan was distance. Professional distance, the kind I should have had in place since the second I walked into that treatment room and found him sitting there.
No more sessions.
No more conversations through doors. Handovers and medication and observations and nothing else. And if he pushed for more then I would simply hold the line until he got bored.
Yeah, I could do that… couldn’t I?
Well fuck if I knew.
As honestly, there was not one single part of this plan that was mine to make, and I knew it before I had gotten out of the car.
Because the ghost was out of seclusion.
Twenty-four hours, reviewed at eight, and by the time I came onto the ward he was already back against his wall at the far end of the day room. One shoulder to it, hands loose, as though he had not a care in the world. As if this place was a resort he had chosen for vacation. Damn it but why did I find his confidence so fucking sexy?
Because he was sexy, and because I now knew exactly what he could do with his fingers and his tongue. That was why. That was all it was. Okay so that was a lie, as it was also the way he watched me. The way he wouldn’t take his gorgeous eyes off me as I walked the entire length of that room.
“Right.” Roz snapped a fresh pack onto the cart. “Are you going to tell me what’s wrong with you, or are we doing the thing where I ask five times?” she asked after about twenty minutes.
“I’m fine,” I lied, as I was about as far as a woman could get from ‘fine’.
“Erin.” My name came out as a sigh.
“I didn’t sleep that well.” Yeah, because you were too busy trying to recreate the moment his fingers were inside of you, I thought wryly.
“You didn’t sleep the night before either,” she noted with a frown.
“I don’t usually sleep well, it’s no big deal, I’m used to it.”
“Mm.” She handed a pot through the hatch, smiled at the man taking it, and turned back. “Take a couple of days. Seriously. You’ve done six weeks in a place that can suck the life out of people, plus it was only yesterday that you had a colleague’s fingers broken right in front of you, trust me, nobody would blink an eye. I’d cover you.” I gave her a soft smile and agreed,
“Maybe,” I replied before turning around to face the next patient waiting. Then I looked up and sucked in a quick breath.
Because one second, he had been at the far end of that room, and now he was standing right in front of my hatch.
I quickly told myself he had been too far away to have heard a single word of it.
But then he looked at me.
And he shook his head, just once.
‘No,’ he mouthed and it was enough to tell me that he had just heard my maybe and was taking it off the table completely. I tried not to look at him in the eyes as I felt his intense gaze trying to pin me in place.
“Everything all right, little nurse?” he asked, in a smug tone as he took the pot from me and his fingers caressed the whole length of the back of my hand with it.
“You seem to have a great deal on your mind today, any reason for that?” That low smooth voice of his did something to the back of my neck, and just like that I was in that room again with his hands on my thighs.
“I’m… I’m fine,” I stammered, my voice telling him otherwise.
“Mm.” And there it was, that thing he did at the corner of his mouth. Because he knew exactly what was on my mind and he knew exactly why, and he was the cause of both.
“Anything I might help with?” he asked, smirking fully this time and I couldn’t help but blush at that, especially with where my mind went to and what type of ‘help’ he could provide. And damn him for making me look directly at his lips!
“Water,” I said, my voice now more strained than ever.
He drank it with a grin, winking at me when he was done.
“Open, please. And lift your tongue.” I went through the motions and so did he, although both of us knew it was pointless. Because there they were, both tablets, sitting underneath that magic fucking tongue of his.
