I wait.
She’s back to looking at some point above my shoulder, not meeting my eyes. “I always felt inadequate going on dates. I’d never slept with anyone. I didn’t know how to flirt…” She trails off.
My stomach starts sinking further, if that’s even possible.
“So?” I ask, my voice low and bitter.
“And maybe I wanted to know what it was like.”
I don't say anything. There’s nothing to say.
She presses on. “You knew I was inexperienced when this started.”
“Yeah.”
“And you knew I wanted to stop being scared of everything.”
“Yeah.”
“You helped me with that.”
A dozen memories hit me at once, none of them invited.
Her on the Ferris wheel asking me to kiss her.
Her face the first time she told me she was a virgin.
The way she shook the first time things went further.
Apparently I’ve been a really successful educational program.
I stare at her, but she can barely look at me.
“So you used me?” I grit out.
“That’s not—”
“I was just the convenient dumbass who would fall for your innocent shit, right?”
“No.”
I laugh under my breath and now it’s me who looks away. “Wow.”
“Wyatt, please.”
“Please what?”
“I never meant to hurt you, Wyatt.”
“So let me make this easy on you. You’re breaking up with me.” I state it as a fact, not a question.
Her eyes fill with tears. “I think it's better if we stop this now.”
I get up, feeling like I’ve aged ten years. Will my feet even carry me? I’m glad when they don’t betray me by shaking or folding up under me.
She follows me toward the door.
“I would've fought for you, Quinn.”
