My phone pings again with a separate message from Ezra, my best friend since boarding school. I wouldn’t have golf, wouldn’t be in this career, if it wasn't for him and his family. They introduced me to the game when I was fourteen and it’s been the greatest love of my life ever since.
When Rowan invited me on one of his annual camping trips, I wasn’t sure if I should go. There would be people I didn’t know there, and I didn’t want to risk being recognized and asked about that night. So I brought Ezra with me and thus the group chat was born.
Ezra
Just a friendly reminder to stay off the Internet for a bit.
I frown and hit the call button, placing it on speaker while I get dressed for dinner. After two rings, my friend’s bright laughter fills the room. “Wow, a phone call? After weeks of being ignored? I’m touched.”
I grunt and zip up a pair of slacks, fiddling with the belt for a moment.
“Earth to Levi? You called me, you know?” Ezra teases, and even though he can’t see me, I scowl at the phone.
“What do you mean stay off the Internet?”
Ezra sighs and some of the lightness vanishes from his voice. “The video of you punching that douchebag is resurfacing. Sabrina is going on some reality show as a contestant and I guess all her past is being scrutinized by people who have nothing better to do with their lives.”
“Which means my past is also being scrutinized,” I say, running a hand through my damp hair. I catch my reflection in the mirror and wince at how haggard I look. Have I lost more weight?
“Unfortunately. But on the bright side, most of the people are on your side. Sabrina is getting ripped to shreds for being a cheater.”
I swallow hard and don’t say anything. Deep down, I feel sorry for her. She’s always wanted to be the center of attention, but I’m sure this is not what she envisioned for herself. The part I hate the most about this entire situation is that I still don’t hate her.
I don’t love her either; whatever lingering feelings I had for her went away in a plume of smoke when she posted that video on the Internet and tried to take me for all I was worth in our divorce. Ultimately, she never truly loved me, she just wanted my money and fame.
“Thanks for the heads up,” I finally say, buttoning up a white dress shirt.
“Should I get the jet ready and come visit you?” Ezra asks
I roll my eyes. “You’ll see me in two weeks at the PGA championship.”
“Ugh, don’t remind me. If I get the yips again like I did at Augusta, I might lose my mind,” Ezra laughs, but I catch the slight worry in his tone.
“You’ll do fine. If you want to come here and train, you’re more than welcome. But don’t visit just to stage an intervention for me,” I say, rolling my eyes.
“I can do both,” he laughs.
“Text me when you land, I’ll pick you up.”
“All right. Love you, man.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I grumble. I hang up and check the group chat again.
Rowan
Mind your business, Jackie boy. I’m serious about the playoff tickets, though.
Levi
I’ll talk to my uncle over dinner. Any chance you can plan another camping trip soon?
Rowan
You got it.
Jacob
Aw, he bloody well misses us.
