“Yeah, I’d know Knox’s voice anywhere. Plus, it still bugs me how he just left and the whole mystery surrounding him. You know what I’m like with a mystery, and that one was kind of personal.”

“Yeah, you guys got on better than anyone,” Cash replies, his eyebrows drawing down.

He’s still frowning, but isn’t saying anything, so I ask, “What is it?”

“How did he get your number?”

I pause, shit, he’s right. Our phones are encrypted and extremely high-tech. The only people who can call us are the people that we give our number to. There is no way that he should have had my number, so how the fuck did he call me?

“It was definitely him, man,” I reply. I am almost entirely certain that it was him.

“I believe you,” Cash replies simply. “We need to go and find Pete and get him to check our phones.” He starts to walk off and then stops, pulls out his phone, and frowns. “Hang on, how did he call you? I haven’t got any bars at all.”

“That’s what I thought, but look, full signal,” I say, holding up my phone, and he gives me a look. “What?”

“You haven’t got any signal either,” Cash points out.

I turn the phone back to me, and he’s right.

“Alright, hang on. Look,” I feel like I’m going crazy, so I open my call log as he stands next to me, and sure enough, there’s the unknown number listed. “See?”

“I didn’t doubt you, man, I just . . .” He trails off. “Where the fuck did the number go? Did you delete it?”

“How could I delete it? You were watching me!” I exclaim. Looking at my call log, which now says the last person to call me was my dad.

“We need to fill the others in,” Cash says with a frown. “I have no idea what the fuck is going on, but something is.”

I nod. “Yeah, but we can’t right now. We need to get this sorted first, so that we can get Luc out of here. I don’t think he’s going to handle this like he thinks he is.”

Cash sighs and runs his hand through his hair. “Yeah. It’s pretty obvious that she’s not here. Mr. R wants us to go through her place and see if we can find a link to Hunt. We’re relatively sure that she’s the one who told Hunt about the files in the office, but we need confirmation on that before we can bring her in. I think Ever’s theory was pretty interesting though, and that is a possibility.”

“True. Mr. R is thinking along the same lines as us, that she knows more than she let on, right?” I ask.

Cash nods. “Yeah, he is, and it’s definitely looking like she did. She played the dumb, completely oblivious housewife very well, and everyone fell for it. I think it’s likely that she has a current link to Hunt as well.”

“I agree. I think that’s the most likely conclusion. Do you think that she was the mastermind?”

Cash shakes his head. “I thought that, but it doesn’t make much sense. Drake knew a lot, and he was very much in charge. I think she just knew a lot more than anyone thought she did and decided to use it to her advantage once she realized that we were going to leave her alone.”

“Probably. So what’s the plan?” I ask.

“We’ll watch the house for a while longer and then search it for anything that will tie her to Hunt,” Cash explains.

He knows that I like going over the plan more than once, especially when something has thrown me off.

He continues, “We have enough on our plate with Hunt, so Mr. R doesn’t want us hanging around here for longer than is strictly necessary. Oberon and his team that are stationed out here are going to keep an eye on the place, and she will be brought in for questioning as soon as they get their hands on her.”

“How does Luc feel about that? Has anyone properly checked in with him? I know we asked as a general question if he was okay with coming out here, but not really if he’s okay with her being brought in. That’s both of his parents who will be in jail because they’re assholes,” I ask with a worried frown.

Cash frowns. “Honestly, I think he’s just done with it all. It’s not like he ever had particularly warm feelings toward his parents. They have always treated him like shit. He wants to steer clear of it, and I’ll let Mr. R know that as far as his parents are concerned, this is where our involvement ends.”

“Good, I was going to suggest that,” I say. “We don’t need to be involved in this. There are plenty of agents that are more than capable of dealing with bringing Linda in for questioning.”

“Exactly,” Cash replies. “After that, I think we’re going to fly straight back. You can fill the others in then, and we’ll see what they say about it.”

I nod, “Sounds like a plan. Could you do me a favor and not talk to any of the guys about it until I bring it up when we’re all together? It’ll be easier to explain to all of them, and you can back me up and say that you saw the number disappear too.”

“Of course, dude,” Cash replies immediately.
